Heyman) — UCFV elves throw children’s Christmas party It was Christmas in the cafeteria for -- around 50 Abbotsford area children at . the University College of the Fraser Valley last Friday. The Personnel department and Early Childhood Education students and instructors teamed up to throw a party that featured arts and crafts, hotdogs and cake, Christmas carols and stories, and a visit by Santa. “We did a similar event at the Chilliwack campus several years ago, and what I remembered about it was how appreciative the kids were,” says Personnel assistant Carol Hardy, who suggested the party. “We called up the Early Childhood Education department for help and they just grabbed the ball and ran with it.” The Early Childhood Education students designed art and craft activities for the children, and were marked for their efforts as part of their final exam for the art and literature component of their studies. “We find this is a more effective way of testing than asking questions on a piece of paper,” said ECE instructor Dona Coates. “This lets them show us what they’ ve learned.” Personnel assistants Nancy Scarrow and Linda Dix acted as chief elves for the event, ECE instructor June Meyer was an enthusiastic Christmas fairy, and Santa’s arrival coincided with receptionist Marilyn Fairclough’s departure from her desk. Kartar Thandi of Facilities was also very helpful in setting up for the party, according to Hardy: “He even made us some Christmas tree stands at the last minute.” Forster’s Catering donated all the food for the party, and Gray Beverage Please see Party, page 2
