Matsqui munitipal Council is subject of much ¢riticism from both sides of the river over the condition of the Ri- yerside road between Abbotsford and the ferry landing. Residents of the north shore, through the Mission Board of Trade representative, Mr, J. A. Ca- therwood, have. urged the Matsqui municipality to get the highway off its hands as a secondary road, if un- able to put it in better condition. And motorists on’ this side of the river are equally expressive over the matter. Tn reply to this er m, Reeve Me- Callum says the Municipality-is power- less to improve the highway until the weather changes. Any gravel placel upon the rough and rocky spots would be thrown to the road edge by the first half-dozen cars, and the Riverside road. he does not consider in worse condition than the Yale road between Abbotsford and the pavement, or the lower Sumas road to Huntingdon. The Government road scarifier had been promised and would be put to work as quickly as available. Mr. McCallum also pointed out that Councillor Hill-Tout of Ward 3, through which ward the road traverses, esti- mates that the Riverside road costs almost one-half of the entire ward re- venue to maintain, Ward Three is of large area, extending from beyond Mr. Hill-Tout’s farm at Poplar to the hills two or three-miles north-east of Abbotsford, and north almost to Mats- qui village. Matsqui Council, the Reeve says, has applied to the Department of Public Works again this year to have the Ri- verside road accepted by the Province as a primary highway—or an interna- tional highway, as the Counci] named But the Provincial Government hag positively refused the request, and Mr. McCallum thinks that planking of the C.P.R. bridge would be the only decid- ing factor to change the Government’s attitude. a ee Over 150,000 members of the B.P.O.E attended dedication of the $3,000,000 temple erected in Chicago in memorial to those who died in the world war.
