American Soldier Receives Fortune
From Father Of Frenchman He
Befriended

The best of luck, which soldiers
used often to wish one another in the
Great War, has befallen one of them
who helped another when his luck was |
}out. The luckless one was a French
poilu who had been severely wound-
ed in the last great move in 1918. An jj
American doughboy brought him out
of danger, bandaged him, exchanged |
cards with him, and wished him the
best of luck. The American boy nev- |
er expected to hear from him again. |
But he has just received a letter from |
Paris to say that the young French-|
man’s father has left him $60,000 in |
his will. One American, at any rate, |
had the best of luck in the war.

Tons Recently Bought In London,
England, At Special Sale
Nearly forty tons of elephant ivory
from Africa and Asia were sold re-
cently at a special sale at Mincing
Lane, London, England. Over seven
hundred elephants contributed to this
collection of tusks, which was valued
at many thousands of pounds. The
average tusk of an elephant is under |
fifty pounds in weight, and is worth
about $150. London is recognized as

jthe headquarters of the ivory trade,
| although of late years Antwerp has
jPecome an important centre for Afri-
jean ivory. Sales take place in Minc-
ing Lane quarterly, and hundreds of

|gantzation in the schools, there being
a number of over 1,000 school teams
in that province, exceeding the total
for the rest of the Dominion.

Soccer is played amongst the Sen-
jors (adults) in many parts of the
|province of Saskatchewan, within
registered and unregistered organiz-
ations and leagues in many cases so
that although there is an unfortunate
lack of co-ordinated effort there is,
|mevertheless, a very valuable nucleus
jof older and experienced players from
the older Provinces and the British
Isles to work on if means can be
found to conneet up and develop
these efforts. There is no question
that for popularizing a game the
league system has been the most ef-
fective, the added spirit of an organ-
ized competition giving a spice to the
matches which is a great incentive to
the gaining of public support.

‘What a Hen Will Eat

Figures Show Feed Average Is 157.4
Pounds Per Year
It may be interesting at a time
when new means of marketing inci-
dental farm products is vitally im-
portant to know what an average
hen can convert into eggs during the
course of a year. There could be no
or authoritative
guide in this regard than the average
of feed consumption in egg laying
contests, determined from the records
of six successive years and averaged
from every province in the Domin-
fon. These figures show that the
average hen will consume 157.4
pounds of feed a year. Of this total
83.6 is grain or meal mixture, and

22.8 per cent. green feed. Add to this
41.2 pounds of milk, and the feed sup- |
ply straight from the farm totals |
157.6 pounds per bird or over 98 per | |
cent. of the feed required. The sup- |
plementary feed included 3,3 pounds’
beef scrap, 1.9 pounds of grit, 3.4!
pounds shell, and 1,2 pounds charcoal. |
A flock of 150 hens will convert |
8.856 pounds of farm grown feeds
into eggs and under ordinary condi- |
tions will show 100 per cent. profit
over cost of feed at current prices
which is in itself a valuable item of

Two concrete suggestions for as-
sisting the western farmer were made
to the government during the debate
in the House of Commons,

Stressing the importance of the
British bacon market, A. Speakman,
United Farmer member for Red Deer,
Alberta, asked the government to
jcall a conference between packers
| and producers of live hogs to evolve
means for supplying this market
regularly. The British dealer, assert-
ed Mr. Speakman, was glad to have
Canadian bacon, but he refused to
| advertise it extensively in Great Bri-
tain unless he was sure that he would
be able to supply the demand created.
|A great many western farmers had
been driven into the hog-raising busi-
ness, Mr. Speakman informed the
House, and the need for a market was
urgent.

organize “school teams and leagues.
Wherever this is done please notify
the writer of this article, and an ef-
fort will be made later to pick up
and co-ordinate these efforts. It is

game of soccer so as not to clash with
any other sports and games enjoyed

amateur sport emphasizing the team
work required to attain efficiency and
the resultant benefit to the school
team and individuals, physically and
morally.

In towns and village schools there
may be a sufficient enrolment of boys
to make up two or more teams.
These in turn could organize with
two or more neighboring schools to
form a school league: (a) a midget
league for grades up to 7, and (b) a
guutlor league for all grades over 7,
including high school pupils. It would
be a great mistake to lay down too
hard and fast rules in the initial

out of town, rural schools desiring
to join, a competition would need to
be so elastic as to permit of two or

like to see it, Frederick Montague,

Edmonton Is Requested

Enquiries have been instituted be-
tween the Department of Railways
and the Canadian National with a
wiew to resuming work on the branch
line from North Battleford, Sask., to
Edmonton, Alberta, according to a
reply given in the House of Com-
mons by Hon. R. J. Maniop, Minister
of Railways, to a question asked by
Cc. R. McIntosh (Lik., North Battle-
ford). The Minister informed the
House that he had had many tele-
grams complaining of the discontin-
uance of this work. Decreased earn-
ings had been given by the railways
as the reason for stopping operations
on this branch line.
