TEXTILE FACTS

Much progress is being made by
the textile industry and manufac-
turers in turning out Products
which give satisfaction to the
buyer in all respeets,

Nothing is more disappointing
than to have the dress we have
shopped for so strenously, lose
its shape, color and finish after
a Yew -wearings,

It is to prevent just such an
occurrence that the textile pro-
ducers are working day and
night. They have succeeded in
perfecting some very effective
processes which prevent these tra-
gedies from occurring,

A process has been invented to
make fabrics wrinkle-proof, and
another for velvet makes it crush-
resistant. Sanforizing or render-
ing a fabric fade-proof is a pro-
cess which has been in use for
a number of years.

Other processes include reduc-
tion of shrinkage capacity. for
cottons and wooilens to less than
1 per cent. Another does away
with the need for starching after
laundering by rendering the fab-
ric permanently crisp.

Still other finishes produce spot
resisiance and water repellancy.

YOUR DRESS FABRICS
Dresses. which are made from
fabrics which have been treated
by any of these processes usually
bear labels so indicating. Some of
these labels bear the following
names: :
“Zelau"—a finish which makes

dresses resist spots, “stains and
general dirt, as wel! as repel
cold or jukewarm liquids. This

process withstands repeated dry-
cleaniug and laundering.

Another similar process for out-
er garments is “Ban-dri.” ‘“Tebil-
ized” is a label found on crush-
resistant or crease-resistant fab-
ries, used on velvet, spun rayon,
and also for cottons, linens and

rayons. Crush-resistance is also
called “martenizing” or “shelton-
izing.”

Sanforizing is an old process,
well known to all, since cotton,
linens and spun rayons have long
been treated, but now there is
also sanforized wool to be had.

.“Naphthalated wool” means the
wool is cleaned in naphtha dur-
ing manufacture, This guarantees

“Cravenetts” ic ~rater-repel-

This process can be renewed at
any time or can be given to 4
garment which has never been
so treated.

“Bellmanized” is the name given
to the process which eliminates
the necessity of starching to re-
store a crisp finish.

Other labels insuring quality as
well as finish are to be found on
many garments. Learn to know
and recognize these labels. If you
do, your shopping problem will
be rendered infinitely easier.

PIE SCIENCE

Take the guesswork out of pie-
making.

The season for berry pies and
fresh fruit pies is so short that
it is easy to forget just how much
Sugar or how much fiour to use
with each kind. We want these
pies to carry fresh fruit flavors,
to be juicy enough but not too
juicy, and to be sweet enough,
but not too sweet; to have flaky,
light crusts and not to run over.
Here are some schedules which
will give excellent results:
BERRY PIE

1 qt. berries

1-1% c¢. sugar

244 tbsp flour

%4 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. butter

The amounts of sugar and flour
depend on the kind of berry.

Line pan with 1-8-inch thick
crust, allowing enough to build
up edges. Fill with berries which
have been mixed with fiour and
Sugar. Have upper crust rolled
a little thinner. Allow upper
crust to lap over lower crust we
inch. Moisten lower crust to seal
perfectly and fold top crust under
the lower. Trim and crimp edges,
turning up. Bake in 450 degree
oven 10 to 15 minutes, then lower
to 350 degrees and bake 30 min-
utes longer,

38% to 4 c. fruit

2-4 tbsp. flour

1% oc sugar

44 tsp. nutmeg

tsp. salt

1 tsp. iemon juice

1% tsp. butter

A few years ago, one farmer
chopped over 200 tons of alfalfa
hay directly from the hay shocks.
However, much rain fell during
the haying season, as is generally
the case, and the cocks were not
turned sufficiently to permit pro-
per drying. As the heavy chopped
hay settled in the barn, it began
to heat. Finally one night a heavy
wind and rain storm came and
the moist air and oxygen blew in
under the eaves and barn sup-
ports and ignited the mass. The
huge flames demolished the entire
barn in a short time. Although
no one seems to understand the
exact causes, it pays to be care-
ful, Wet, improperly cured hay is

PRECAUTION ADVISED

In case of doubt as to the safe-
ty in storing rain-damaged, musty
hay, it is a wise precaution to
stack the hay for a period of 5
to 7 weeks out of doors ,thus per-
mitting it to go through a ‘sweat.’
Such hay is then safe for chop-
Ping into the barn. Such a plan
means extra labor, but in the long
run it is much worthwhile. The
loss of a barn by fire is a tragedy.
The effect of this may have a
depressing effect for Many years.
The wise stockman plays safe.

Feed the poorest hay early in
the fall. It does not improve with
storage and the animals are in
§00d shape, carrying food resery-
@s over from the pasture season.
Also the poor hay May be blended
with the greener, brighter hays.

Off-grade hay is consumed more
readily if chopped, since fresh sur-
faces are exposed and the palat-
ability is improved: The weather-
ed hay may be rendered quite
palatable by moistening it» with
