Pour boiling water over dates in small bowl. Cool. Cream
shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Sift flour
with soda, salt, and cocoa. Add to shortening mixture
alternately with date mixture, adding the dry ingredients
first and last. Pour batter into 13 x 9% x 2 inch pan
(bottom rubbed with shortening). For topping, sprinkle
sugar, nuts and chocolate pieces over batter. Bake in
a moderate oven 350 deg. for 35 mins.

POLKA DATER CAKE

Boil:
; lc. water
Add:
1% c. chopped dates % ce. chocolate chips
(cool)
Beat until creamy:
l c. soft margarine 2 eggs
1% c. brown sugar Pinch of salt
Add:
1% c. sifted flour 1% tsp. baking powder

Combine two mixtures and 1 tsp. vanilla. Mix well.
Spread in large pan 15 x 10 x 1 inch. Sprinkle with
*% cup chocolate chips and % cup chopped nuts. Bake in
350 deg. oven for 30 mins.
