Overseas opportunities For students The International Education department maintains a library of resource material for the purpose of enabling students to find information on study, work, or volunteer opportunities overseas, including information on the Asia Pacific Scholarship awards for students. For faculty and staff Programs of interest to faculty and staff include the Asia Pacific scholar’s awards, the Canada-ASEAN Centre academic institutional support fund, CIDA professional awards, and the Commonwealth of Learning fellowships. Funding is available for a number of projects including overseas study, exchange programs, and curriculum development. Current opportunities Koyo Gakuen, Nagasaki, Japan, is starting an International Language Institute, and hosting a summer study tour to Japan in 1993, Tianjin Languages Institute, Tianjin, China, is looking for UCFV instructors who would like to go to Tianjin as visiting scholars. UCFV is currently hosting two visiting scholars from Tianjin, who are available to give workshops or speak to classes about China. Iwatani College of Business, Yokohama, Japan is looking for instructors who would like to teach in Japan. Please feel free to drop in to the International Ed. office if you are interested. Saturday bus tour to SFU and UBC - date to be announced (Nov. 7 or 14), $5 per person, bring a lunch. 10 Peer mentors wanted The International Education department is currently looking for UCFV students to fill positions as peer mentors to new international students. We are looking for individuals who are energetic, have strong interpersonal and leadership skills, enjoy helping others, and have completed at least one semester at UCFV. Peer Mentors will assist new international students with their orientation to UCFV and the surrounding . community, providing information on the various personal and academic resources available to them. International students from many different countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Thailand and Hong Kong, come to study at UCFV. The International Education department provides academic support, as well as cultural, recreational and social activities for the UCFV international student community. In addition, the International Education department sponsors activities on campus to further the goal of “internationalizing the campus.” Canadian students, staff, and faculty who are interested in different cultures and in promoting cultural awareness on the UCFV campuses are.invited to join in these activities. The Peer Mentor program is one way to become involved. Application forms for the Peer Mentor program are available in the International Education office in Room E240.
