ADVENTURES IN COOKING 129 Hagen erected the Duck Creek Hotel, named after the creek flowing through this little district. Strawberries were found to be a successful crop in Wynndel, and a box factory was built to box the berries for shipment. Grain too was grown in sufficient quantity to require grain elevators. South and east of Cranbrook, there are three localities forming a triangle, the points being Waldo, Grasmere and Roosville. ‘These are named for the original settlers, the Waldos, the Roos, the Phillips and Sinclairs all arrived before 1900. John Waldo was the earliest settler in 1860. Between 1855 and 1860 Michael Phillips came to this valley and established a Hudson’s Bay Post on the sight of the present Horan and Davis Ranch, a quarter of a mile from the United States border. Descendants of these first families form the most of the present popula- tion. Cattle raising is the main industry, and all the women are active Women’s Institute members.
