Atkinson at the Sumas municipal hall last Thursday in an ef- fort to obtain governmental assistance to drain and dyke low-lying parts of their farms. By paying an annual levy to the drainage district, the far- mers maintained they should get this work done, or at least, be given rea- sonable assistance. Mr. Atkinson was sympathetic, but deplored his inability to obtain much governmental assis- tance. Use of the ditcher was offered the farmers at a charge of $20 a day The Sumas Prairie Social Club held their seventh annual husband’s en- tertainment in the Sumas Agricultura’ Hall on Friday, April 24. Fifty adults enjoyed cards, contests and a play en- titel “Mrs Apple and her Corps” put on by 11 members of the Club, with Mrs. York as director. Those taking part were Miss Ella Fraser, piano re- cital; Mrs. Ira Serl, reading; Mrs. J. Hunter, solo. After which, the ‘guests were served a tasty supper. The tables were prettily decorated in the club col- ors, pink and green. After the supper dancing was enjoyed. Our answer was, Sumas is likely to | be extinct in 1940, and Sumas Is lable to be 4 great deal larger in 1940. Of | course, the real answer is that Sumas jwill be just what the people make ft | now or In 1990. Sumas was once a great town in Whatcom Coun- ty, but its matin source of revenue came from the timber industry. Sumas in 1949 has two options, it can either be a thrifty little farming community or it can still be living "3! years ago today.” There is no need of bemoaning ‘the fact that we do net possess an industry—think of the wealth about us. This money is furnished at 6 per cent. inter- est—which is a lower rate than the Farmers Mutual are able to secure for their own funds. It becomes necessary for the Huntingdon Rural to expend all their surplus for the next few years in order to cover their territory (and perhaps to secure more capital). It is the desire of the farmers that a new line be built into Abbotsford this summer, and this has already been started. I am of the opinion that when the revenues are budgeted, the Company's own funds will be sufficient to finance this extension. The extensions made during the past few years have been most en- couraging, many new subscribers have been added, thus increasing the income and enabling an improved service. To illustrate the possibilities, as also the record of the Huntingdon Ru- ral, a synopsis of the balance sheet for the past year is appended. ASSETS Jan. 1930 $10,249.89 75.09 0.00 245.00 15.00 Dec. 1930 $11,196.83 461.66 15.00 560.56 76.00 Book value of plant FeO ra 3 Ie VARA SPOR RODE OAT Employees Working Funds Due from Subscribers .. Materials on Hand ... $10,744.98 Total Assets $12,309.05 The financial statement thus shows an increase in plant of $806.94; increase in cash $376.57; revolving fund $15; and subscribers’ bills $315.56; or a total increase of $1,514.07, with an increase of accounts payable of $678.75 which shows an increase in, values of $835.32 for the year, This increase was based upon an original Stock Investment of $2,582.60. The large part of this stock was inyested years ago In order to get telephone service. This same increase of value has been going on for the past three years but it has had to go right into the plant to keep it up. The same re-invest- ment must continue for a few years more. But how could it be otherwise with so small an investment—about 25% o the value ? It has taken the Farmers Mutual 25 years to pay for its plant out of its income on an ori- ginal investment of less than 20% of its present value. The present value of the plant may be estimated in various ways. Book values of Mutual Companies are usually kept quite low. Companies having phones over widely-scattered territory are estimated to be worth around $100.00 per phone in service. There are 115 phones in service on the Huntingdon Rural Telephone system. Franchise rights are variously estimated to be worth from 25% to 60% of the value of the plant. The Farmers Mutual would naturally dislike to break up the present relations, having recently . (which will not be needed if the change is made), Further, they feel that the pre- sent free intercourse between both sides of the boundary is good for both communities, and that it would be wise at present to delay for a few years a new before making a change.
