‘Kiwassa Girls ' Club

It has been said, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the
world.” It has also been said, “Save a boy and you save a man
but save a girl and you save a family.”

Because Vancouver Kiwassa Club members foresaw the value
of an investment whereby girls might meet and grow in health,
happiness and responsibility, they opened a Club House for Girls
in the east end of Vancouver. ‘The original plan was that a room
would be rented, pleasantly furnished and provided with books,
magazines, music, etc. However, when the club became a reality,
it was much more than that. In a community where there was a
definite need there was available an old fire hall recently vacated
by a boys’ club. Months of work by Kiwassa members transformed
this building into attractive, home-like surroundings. <A Social
Worker was hired as the Director and on May 18, 1949, the doors

of the Kiwassa Girls’ Club were opened, Now with an enrolment

of 166 girls from four years up, the club is open five days a week
and most evenings, too. In and out the youngsters go—perhaps
for a craft group or cooking; it may be for games; often it is for a
chat, serious or friendly, with the Director; or sometimes it is just
to sit in the comfortable, homey atmosphere of the lounge with its
books and radio.

The benefits from such a programme have, in the short space
of two years, been felt and appreciated by the Community and it
is the hope of every Kiwassa member that wherever the need for
such a Club House for Girls is apparent, citizens everywhere will
share in the financial responsibility of furthering such a project.
