Salad Dressing

The vinegar, from sweet pickles,
makes a nice flavored salad dress-
ing—a change from using fresh
vinegar.

Salad Oil

Salad and cooking oils should be
kept away from direct light.

Tea

The flavor of tea can be enhanced
by placing thoroughly-dried orange
peel in the can, or package, of tea
leaves.

A small bit of orange peel, put
into the tea-pot, before pouring in
the boiling water, also improves the
flavor of the tea.

Coffee

The flavor of coffee can be en-
hanced by heating the ground coffee
in a hot oven for three to five
minutes, immediately before making
the coffee.

Test for pure coffee:

Stir some ground coffee in a glass
of cold water—very few grounds
will sink to the bottom of the glass
if it is good quality coffee.

The flavor of coffee is improved,
for some, by the addition of a pinch
of salt to the ground coffee, before
pouring in the water. Others add a
few drops of vanilla extract to the
coffee, just before serving, for an
improved flavor. A raw, dried prune,

added to the ground coffee, gives it

still a different flavor.

Poison

Stick pins into the corks of bottles
containing poison, to warn anyone
searching for a medicine in the dark.

Keep poison, for insects, inside a
mailing tube (similar to those in
which calendars are mailed). Then
children and animals cannot get at
it.

Ants

Ants may be kept out of the re-

frigerator by placing the legs of the

refrigerator on bits of tar paper, or
brushing the rollers, or legs, with
kerosene (coal oil).

Powdered cloves, or borax, will
scare ants away.

Cucumber peel will drive out ants
and crickets.

Red ants do not like parsley, they
will disappear like magic if bits of
the herb are scattered in their fav-
orite places.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches may be killed, or
kept away, by a mixture of boracic
acid powder and condensed milk,
made into a thick paste, and formed
into little balls. For preventive
measures, make up a new mixture
every month, or so, as it loses its
strength.

Beetles
Beetles may be destroyed by
sprinkling benzine around their

haunts, or a mixture of alum and
powdered borax is effective. Melted
paraffin, dropped around, is also
effective in keeping black beetles
down.
