The peach tree is a native of China, and has been grown there for thousands of years. Considered the symbol of long life, it was immortalized on painted porcelains, in poetry, and in art. It was introduced into Europe via Persia, hence the fruit was sometimes called the Persian Apple. The Spaniards introduced peaches to the ‘New World’ where they were grown in Mexico as early as the late 1500’s. Thus, this delicious fruit with its charming blossoms, has captured the imagination of man for centuries. B.C. grown peaches are available fresh in our stores commencing in late July and lasting well into September. Serve your family B.C. Peaches often during the season both fresh and cooked. But don’t forget, this sunny summer goodness can be enjoyed all year long by home-canning, preserving or freezing. B.C. PEACHES, SEMI-FREESTONES There are several early varieties of B.C. Peaches which are semi-freestone — the ® most popular of which is Red Haven. The early peaches are highly coloured with a very attractive appearance and firm yellow flesh. They are usually available starting in late July or very early August and running into the latter part of August. While semi-freestones are primarily dessert peaches, because of their full flavour many people prefer to preserve them. By cutting them in quarters, rather than halves, the stones can be easily removed. B.C. PEACHES, FREESTONES B.C. Freestone Peaches are the home preserving favourites. The main varieties are ‘“‘Vees”’ and Elbertas. These peaches are fully freestone with yellow flesh and smooth skin. They’re very popular for fresh desserts and home preserving. They are usually available starting about mid-August and running well into September. ZasGZSs7/ lo SJ Uwe. 262 j Poul
