Headlines/Sept. 30, 1992 Perry to visit UCFV Oct. 19 Minister of Advanced Education Tom Perry will visit UCFV on Oct. 19 to tour facilities, meet with the UCFV community, and officially open Building E. He will start in the morning witha ~ tour of the Chilliwack campus, meet with the Student Society there, then travel to Mission. There he will tour the Toti:Ithet Centre, a native education centre run as a partnership between UCFV and the Coqualeetza Centre. He will have lunch at Toti:lthet with representatives of the centre, the Faculty and Staff Association, students, the Board, and senior management. He will then go to the Abbotsford campus for an open forum with the FSA, all members invited, in Room A100 between 1:45 and 2:45 p.m. He will tour the Abbotsford campus from 3-4 p.m., and officially open Building E at 4 p.m. All students and employees are invited to the official opening. Perry will wrap up his day at UCFV by meeting with the Board and President Peter Jones from 4:30-5:30 p.m. University college story goes “down under” President Peter Jones will take the university college message “down under” over the next week. Jones has been invited by TAFE (equivalent to our Association of Canadian Community Colleges) to tour several Australian institutions and address a major conference on post-secondary education. Jones will spend the first three days of his visit to the Brisbane area touring post-secondary institutions and meeting with administrators and staff. On October 3 Jones will present the keynote address at the conference at the Gold Coast and lead two workshops. His presentation will focus on the evolution of the colleges and institutes system in B.C. He will also use the opportunity to highlight the development of university colleges. Jones said that Australia currently has a distinct two-part model of post-secondary education similar to that of Ontario. The conference will be examine both the Canadian and Japanese post-secondary systems with a view to developing new options for Australians. Equ ity committee planning Pro-D day At its latest meeting, the Equity committee split into four subcommittees to better concentrate on four priorities that it has identified. These are: development of a professional development day, policy development, practical issues, and promotion of equity-related events. The professional development day will be similar to the one held last year with Stuart Smith, and will likely include a series of workshops and a keynote speaker on equity issues. It is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 29. The policy subcommittee will work towards developing an equity policy for UCFV that provides guidelines for ensuring equity in the workforce and the classroom. The practical issues subcommittee will- focus on creating lasting legacies from the Year of Equity, such as bursaries and improved access to education for members of minority groups. The promotion subcommittee will publish a calendar of events of equity-related issues and generally work to promote all Year of Equity events. The next Equity committee meeting is Oct. 7 in-room B319 in Abbotsford at 3 p.m. Sexual harassment conference Sexual Harassment, A Costly Proposition is the title of the eighth annual conference of the Canadian Association Against Sexual Harassment in Higher Education. The conference, to be held Nov. 11-14 in Victoria, B.C., will examine the emotional cost of sexual harassment to complainants; the financial cost to employers, unions and institutions; the personal cost to respondents and the ultimate cost to society.
