Eaton and others equally well-known, have taken up an analogous chorus, pronouncing definite opinions that the Safety of the world generally depends upon the hearted amity of the English-speaking peoples. Augustus Was possessed of supreme wisdom and knew when aggrandisement became Synonymous with weakness, and that power resides in consolidation; in like manner the communion of Britain and the United States should tend to world strength. Sir Auckland Geddes has done yeoman service towards the strengthening of Anglo-American since he went to Wash- ington, and the United States people have vecognized in him a representa- live with a combination of qualities which they have not failed to appre- Few men have proven them- so well able to discharge the all-important position of ambassador at Washington—if we except Lord Bryce, Geddes has again given proof of an intimacy of understanding of American conditions and Ameri ideals in his latest utterances. Knowledge of each other and the manners and customs of the peoples of the two great English-speaking countries is solid foundation for that frfendship and sympathy which we are all seeking to inerease and f tify.
