Continued from Front Page Artificial Dairy Breeding Project MacDonald, provincial minister of agriculture, who is keenly inter- ested. An interesting talk was given by G. Cooper, South Coghlan road, who spoke of the progress being made in Great Britain on this subject and quoted from an article in “The Farmer's Week- ly”, an Old Country publication, which referred to the vast scheme for improving .the quality of Britain’s herds by the medium of artificial insemination, which has been put before the British Minister of Agriculture by the Marketing Board. “The plans envisage the control by the Board of a national chain of artificial insemination centres under a uniform system”, the speaker quoted, and from the re- port in the article it is estimated that about 60 centres, carefully sited according to the cattle pro- duction, would serye to fill the breeding requirements of the post-war period. Marked Savings “The scheme would take ap- proximately five years to com- plete”, the article continues, and states that about ten to fifteen centres would be erected each year. Each centre, it is estimated, would cost on the average about £7,000. 4 Dealing with costs, it reports that even now, artificial insem- ination centres are servicing cows at about 25 shillings per head, which means that if the farmer with 16 cows turns over to ar- tificial insemination it costs £20, 2 saving annually of round about 40. Urge Local Meetings F. J. Kellaway of Cloverdale received a vote of thanks from the meeting for his work in drawing up the constitution and by-laws. L. L. Jessen presided, and in his remarks asked the delegates to arrange general meetings of their own locals as ‘soon as possible for the purpose of organization and increasing membership. Dewdney-Deroche Local Dewdney-Deroche Local will be organized at a meeting in Dewd- ney Hall Monday night, Oct. 2. It already has 59 members with 828 cows and heifers pledged. However, a Local needs 1,000 pledges for incorpoyation and a minimum of 1200 to satisfy feder- al authorities. Dairy farmers east of Mission can apply to R. Mac- gregor or R. Appleby, both of Dewdney, for additional data. Contact may be made by Mats- qui and other interested farmers with Emil Anderson or L, T. Be- harrell, Matsqui. Sumas Committee Notices have been sent out to most Sumas farmers regarding the pledging of cattle to be bred by artificial insemination. Of the 125- applications mailed, only 20 have been returned, giv- ing a total of 200 head of the three different breeds, Guernsey, Jersey and Holstein. The Sumas executive feel that if the number of cattle applied for does not exceed 500 head, this will not be sufficient to form an organization in the Su- mas area.
