CHRISTMAS WREATHS 4 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/8 tsp. salt 1 1/2 eups shortening 1 _ cup sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp. grated orange rind Cream shortening until soft, add sugar; cream until light and fluffy. Add eggs and orange rind, mix well. Add flour and salt which have been sifted together. Chill dough. Roll small pieces of dough into pencil shapes about 6 inches long and 1/4 inch thick. Form into circle, tie ends in single knot. Place on un- greased baking sheet. Press bits of red candied cherries to simulate holly. Green cherries & trimettes are also very effective. Bake in hot oven 400° for 10 minutes or until set but not brown. - Margot Harris. CHRISTMAS TREE BALLS 1/4 cup whipping cream 12 marshmallows 1 cup chopped nuts 1/2 cup chopped dates 1 1/4 cups shredded coconut 2 cups graham wafer crumbs (any cookie) Whip cream, cut marshmallows into small pieces and drop into cream. Refrigerate. Chop nuts and dates very small. Add coconut and crumbs. Mix and add to cream. Squeeze to gether with hands. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Roll cookie mixture into balls and then roll in jelly powder. Put piece of green citron peel or angelica on top of each. ~ L. Van Druten. 36 CHRISTMAS FOODS CHRISTMAS SNOWBALLS 2 2/3 cups sifted flour 1 7/8 cups sugar 4 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 2 tsp. salt /3 cup soft shortening 1 1/4 cups milk 2 tsp. flavoring 5 unbeaten egg whites (2/3 cup) Sift together dry ingredients into & bowl. Add shortening, milk and flavouring. Beat 2 minutes. Add egg whites. Beat 2 more minutes. Pour into greased muffin cups or paper baking cups. Bake in moderate oven (350°F) for 25 minutes. Remove from pan; cool. Completely cover with 7-minute icing. Roll in coco- nut and shape lightly into balls. Trim with green gumdrop leaves and top each snowball with a candle. Yield: 24 medium-size cupcakes. - D. Crawford. NOEL SHORTBREAD ba cup butter 5 tbsp. icing sugar 2 1/4 cups sifted flour 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups grated almonds (optional) Blanch almonds and dry thoroughly; put through meat grinder. Cream - butter until soft, add icing sugar, vanilla, flour and almonds. Roll into balls or fingers or roll out between wax paper (not too thin) and cut in shapes. Bake on un greased cookie sheet in 325°F oven for 20 minutes. Sift icing sugar over them while still warm. - Betty Peever.
