New folks Associate registrar hired Registrar Bill Cooke now has some extra help for dealing with the increasingly complex task of deciding who will be admitted to UCFV. Sylvia Currie has joined the Admissions and Registration department as associate registrar. Although she has only been here a short while and the division of duties hasn’t been cast in stone, Cooke says that part of Currie’s job will be to spread awareness of admissions procedures. “There are several parts to the admissions process,” says Cooke. “There’s the processing of applications, which admissions supervisor Bev Brown handles. Then there’s the development and implementation of policy. Then there’s letting people know about those policies and how they affect admissions. I see Sylvia working quite a bit on the this third part.” Currie comes to UCFV from SFU, where she was the undergraduate advisor for the Faculty of Education, and also assisted with the administration of teacher-education programs held off-campus in the Prince Rupert/Terrace, Prince George and Fort St. John/Dawson Creek areas. She graduated from SFU with a BEd and was a substitute teacher for awhile before returning to work at her alma mater. She applied for the UCFV associate registrar job because the idea of being involved in new programs appealed to her. She also finds the small size of | UCFYV appealing. “Tt seems that people here get to know each other more, are involved in more things, and generally have more diversity in their jobs than at SFU.” Currie notes that there is a general awareness at SFU of UCFV’s university college status and the partnership between the two institutions for the Bachelor of Arts program. She also says she’s been impressed with the UCFV transfer students she’s met over the years. “Transferring can be stressful, but the Fraser Valley students are usually quite content, and it’s quite a smooth process for them.” Headlines/June 3, 1992 Sylvia Currie Currie lives with her husband in Pitt Meadows and is actively involved in several sports, her favorite being mountain biking. She’s taking tennis lessons and also likes fishing. Currie’s family moved a lot while she was growing up, and she has lived in Ontario, Kentucky, Europe and West Africa. Although she’s driving further now to get to work, she finds the commute less stressful because there’s “no traffic.” Currie works in the A&R offices at the Abbotsford campus and can be reached at local 4245.
