Bovie of sity scientist laboratory, at Boston. Professor Bovie is the scientist who recently startled the country with an experiment at Orono, Me., which proved that chickens exposed only 20 minutes a day to the ultra-violet rays emitted from a mercury vapor lamp of quartz grew five times larger than their brothers and sisters, matured faster and enjoyed perfect health. Tt is found that human blood is many times more sensitive to light than the most sensitive photographic plate, and these ultra-violet rays probably bring about a mysterious but beneficial photo-chemical change in the blood passing through the small capillaries and veins just under the skin. Anticipating more practical use of this knowledge, Prof, Bovie expects that ‘Our homes of the future will probably be built with a solaruim on the upper floor, that ean be thrown open to the sky on sunny days. Later on when the recently discovered process of making quartz glass is standardized 4nd cheapened, our better homes will have all their windows of quartz Im- stead of the ordinary glass such as wa now use. “Qur so-called sun porches and sunrooms now in use are just a joke. They are worse than « joke, because people are fooled by them and don’t get out from under the window-glass which filters out all the ultra-violet rays we must have to be healthy. ‘The only reason the general use of window-glass has not actually kill- ed off the human race is because eating certain things, like some green veget- ables, olive oil, etc., to a very less extent than sunlight, causes a similar photo-chemical change in our bodies. 2 (This ig probably because these foods absorbed something from ‘the ultra-violet rays of the sunlight while they were growing.’’ eae soe Grandma has had her curiosity satisfied at Inst.
