- 106 = CAMPING HINTS If you are tenting, be sure to take along a large sheet of polythene to use as a ground sheet, between the floor of the tent and the ground. Fill plastic bottles (bleach bottles are fine when washed thoroughly) with water to about 2 inches from the top. Freeze solid. Take these frozen bottles on your trip or picnic and have ice cold water on hand at all times. The ice will take about 24 hours to melt. Sweet drinks for children can be made in the same way. Pack hot wieners in a large thermos and pour boiling water over them. This way you can give your children hot dogs without having to take the time to build a fire if you are in a hurry. Another method is to pack the hot wieners in sealers, pour boiling water over them. Now wrap the sealers in towels or newspapers and pack in a box. They will keep hot up to 6 hours. You can use the foil packages from soup mix as a measur- ing cup. Cut the foil package at the red line - the empty package, filled to the red line, contains exactly one cup of water. Place stews or chili or any foods you are able to pre- pare ahead of time, in honey pails and freeze. Keep in a cooler in the car. They will take about 3 days to thaw. Good for a week end camping trip. Plastic bottles filled with water and frozen solid keep perishables such as lettuce, tomatoes, etc. crisp and ready to use. The water may be used for drinking when the ice thaws.
