And the dir- ectors are naturally expecting is to be ‘‘bigger and better than ever,’’ as undoubtedly it will be. ‘ahh Interest seems to have laktt©&ned in Abbotsford this year over agricult- ural matters, for no fair is arrang®d for. Wonder how long that New York girl who broke the long-distance danc- ing record could walk the floor with a colicky baby. ee * , see It seems unfortunate that the Reyal Bank is not a property owner in Abbotsford, but continues as a tenant business in this section. Most of the bank branches in our neighboring Valley towns own their buildings, and in practically every place they. are an architectural credit to the place in which they do business. Among the various factors checking the progress of this district—and Abbotsford in particular—is the condition of the local bank. During the past year the town has been visited by many parties with a view of establishing in business here—including scyeral lines of commerce for which there is a need, one man paying a deposit on a piece of property on which he intended to erect a store building. Jn the course of their prospecting these parties eventually consulted the bank, and, irrespective of the advice they were given eould not but dbserve the volume of business being transacted there, and the undersized quarters the staff functioned in. Upon learning that the bank (an institution naturally turned to for business counsel) had not sufficjent confidence in the district’s permanency to own suitable business quarters, prospective citizens naturally hesitated to buy property or establish here, and _ left for other places. In justice to the Royal Bank it must be said an effort“was made on their par! Yr"eetlire the Bank of Montreal property. ‘Yo our mind the price they were willing to pay was fair, and failure to effect a transaction will be a loss to every body concerned. For the price mentioned in the Bank of Montreal property negotiations, a presentable and suitable building could be erected. Saving of rent, better facilities for the staff and improved service to the public would balance this initial expense very, quickly. As a tenant, this fundamental commercial utility stands in our midst reflecting upon the permanency of our town and district. é ** ss 8 There was a time when the sixteen-year-old flapper could get a tanning without having to go to the seashore. * a 8 : ‘ i, see she has made a pie a day for The pie was baked fresh every day except Sunday—on Saturdays she always baked two. It’s a record to be proud of in this land of pie, where home-cooking is not always what it has been in the past. Not that baking a pie every day is a test of a perfect wife, or that it is impossible to obtain good pie from a bakery. ~ But every man in Abbotsford will agrée that there is something about a fine fat pie, fresh from the oven in one’s own kitchen, that is not to be matched by any other experience. And there is moral in the very fact that the woman in this case has done her daily pie duty faithfuily. It shows that her husband appreciates it and has always been on hand to eat, his share of it. If there is any prescription for keeping a husband satisfied for 20 years, this woman oe A woman in Lancaster, 9., boasts that has it. And that prescription is pie. , a a see The Scottish Society in Vancouver fully justifies its existence were the activities of the organization to stop with the uncovering of the disgrace- ful circumstances surrounding the murder of poor Janet Smith. During the past few months band practices haye been held in the following: a fraternal — hall, garage, hotel, sample room, theatre, cellar and a tailor shop. The garage was satisfactory, until the bass player objected to the smell of gasoline interfering with his artis- tic rendering on his part. However, everything is now satis- factory, and residents are not to be surprised that the wondering thespians will call upon them for the use of their kitchen as arrangements have been made to rent the old jail for practise purposes. Whether the doubtful atmo- sphere of a jail will appeal to the soul of the bass player more than the gaso- line remains to be seen, In the competition open to the civil- ian and soldier blind of Canada at the Canadian National Exhibition, Toronto J.
