PESTS: Hew to Cot Red of Thon ANTS: One of the easiest ways to catch ants is to make an ant trap. To do this soak a small sponge in: 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons honey 2 cups hot water 2 grams sodium arsenate OR 1 gram sodium arsenite (buy from drug store) Put the sponge in a _ tight tin which has had small holes punched in it. The ants will take the poison out of the tin and carry it back to the queen thus destroying the colony. SILVERFISH: (Also used for ants). Sprinkle sodium fluoride powder along the points of entry. (Be careful to keep from children and pets.) MOTHS: To protect against moths, first of all air any gar- ment in the sun and wind. This helps to a large extent. Then spray with a good solution of DDT or brush them and sift naphthalene flakes or paradi- chlorobenzene crystals among them. Commercial sprays on the mar- ket are also good to use. As a general rule, clear out closets, and whisk out along the base- boards and moulding cracks. Then spray thoroughly. Seal the closet for a few hours to allow the fumes to work. Some sprays can be sprayed directly on the clothes. Check particularly the spots where two pieces of cloth come together, such as under the arm, inside trouser legs, etc. 30 If goods are to be stored, make sure all moths have been killed first, using the methods above. Then wrap carefully, first in tissue paper, then in newspaper, (moths don’t like printer’s ink). Sprinkle pepper throughout, and wrap tightly in a cardboard box. CARPET BEETLES: Same treatment as for moths. FLIES: The most effective and desirable method of controlling house flies consists of eliminating their breeding places, such as manure and garbage. Next, screen all doors and windows. For flies in the house, kill in the following manners: With swatters, adhe- sive fly paper, poisoned fly pads or by exposing in saucers (out of the reach of children or pets) poisoned bait made by mixing 1 teaspoon of formalin in a cup of sweet milk or water, or by spray- ing with pyrethrum - kerosene spray. This fly spray, which is cheap and easy to prepare, oper- ates best in a closed space. The dead and paralyzed flies should be burned or thrown into boiling water. Pyrethrum- Kerosene Spray: (useful for destroying all in- sects). Take % to 1 pound pyre- thrum to 1 gallon water-white kerosene. Let stand, shaking occasionally, for 2 hours. Siphon off clear liquid. Keep in tightly- corked container. For a pieasant odor add 3 ounces of essential oil such as methyl salicylate, or oil of sassafras. Spray with a fine mist. This operates best when doors and windows are closed.
