ACCESS UPDATE Headlines/Sept. 26, 1991 Membership solidified — Gaston re-elected Chair Jack Gaston has been re-elected chairperson of the UCFV Access Committee. The UCFV Access Committee meets Friday afternoons from 2—4 p.m. on alternating campuses. All meetings are open. Arts subcommittee membership The Arts degree subcommittee will consist of Darryl Plecas (Criminology), Rory Wallace (Humanities), Dave Allen (English), Ian Fenwick (Theatre), Scott Fast and Dave Gibson (Social Sciences). The first meeting reviewed the numerous issues related to the task of defining the Bachelor of Arts degree program. Consultation and information gathering, academic credibility, independence and flexibility were identified. The subcommittee also discussed the importance of new instructors teaching all levels to maintain faculty collegiality. The possibility of a trimester system was also discussed. It was noted that the initial arts degree will also be shaped by the sponsoring university and that time constraints will demand that some decisions will need to be made even while the program is evolving. Science subcommittee announced The Science degree subcommittee will consist of Linda Riva (Math), Elaigh Guidera (Computing), Lillian Martin (Chemistry), George McGuire (Physics) and Ernest Kroeker (Biology). The group had not met yet. Five subcommittees in Career/Tech In the Career/Technical area five subcommittees are now operating or will soon be formed, with Social Work and Crininal Justice the first off the blocks. Computer Information Systems, Business Administration, and Aviation are also forming subcommittees. Nursing is also reviewing degree options. The Social Work subcommittee includes program head Gloria Wolfson, instructors Rosalie Chappell, Pat Gillespie, Astrid Stec and Advisory Committee chair Clifton Doyle. Wolfson reported that discussions with UVic are proceeding smoothly. The UVic program is accredited by the BC Association of Social Workers. In Aviation, UCFV will work closely with Coastal Pacific in exploring degree options. Casey Sheridan commented on initial discussions with OLA regarding a possible Business Administrations degree. “If our basic requirement is that our Business Administration diploma students are to ladder into a full degree, the only alternative is through OLA,” said Sheridan. “We could conceivably put together a Business Administration degree with block transfer to OLA very simply and in time for September 1992.” LRC adopts standards for expanding library Betty Harris reported that the LRC subcommittee has adopted the Standards for Degree Granting Libraries as the benchmark from which to begin e upgrading the library. By this measure the UCFYV library collection should at least double in size. Education and Social Services in demand Mark Hoffmann reported that anecdotal information from counsellors and advisors indicates that “education and a range of social services type professions would be highly sought after by students at UCFV.” Hoffmann also noted that it is very important that the counselling department have input into emerging processes and procedures. “Students are already confused about what the options are and we would like to ensure that it doesn’t get more confusing,” said Hoffmann. ACCESS MEETING of SEPTEMBER 20 Terms of reference for UCFV Access subcommittees were presented by Peter Jones. Learning Environment subcommittee to consider broad issues A Learning Environment subcommittee will be formed with sociology instructor Jean Ballard-Kent as chair and one yet-to-be-selected representative from each of Academic, Career/Technical and Educational Support areas and two members at large.
