RUGS AND CARPETS For glue spots, sponge with warm water and a clean cloth. Follow with detergent suds and vacuum out suds. If glue has dried, sponge with vinegar. For grease stains apply carbon tetrachloride and sponge with clean cloth. If stain remains, try detergent suds, working from outside to centre of spot. Vacuum out suds. For ice cream stains vacuum and sponge with lukewarm water and a clean cloth. Apply detergent suds. If stain persists, make a paste of 1 tablespoon of white flour and 1 teaspoon of fresh milk. Apply to stain and allow to remain two or three hours. Scrape off paste with a blunt knife and sponge repeatedly with lukewarm water. When dry, spot with carbon tetrachloride, if necessary. For soiled areas on rugs, first vacuum, then sponge with a solution of %4 cup of liquid ammonia to 1 quart of lukewarm water. Dry gently with clean cloth. For a rug that is matted down: 1. hold a steam iron about 2 inches above rug. 2. use a soft brush. Floor paste wax may take grease off a rug. RUST If iron rust spots are covered with cream of tartar and salt, slightly moistened and placed in the sun, they will disappear. Spread the stain over a pan of boiling water and squeeze lemon juice on it. After a few minutes, rinse with clean water and repeat the treatment. Then launder in hot suds. An alternate method is to sprinkle the stain with salt before squeezing on the lemon juice, and dry in the sun. Then rinse and launder in hot suds. Sprinkle salt on the stain then squeeze on lemon juice. Spread in the sun to dry. SALT To keep salt from clogging in your shakers in damp weather, place the salt shakers in a hot oven occasionally for a few minutes or a few pieces of uncooked rice. SCRATCHES To cover a scratch on walnut furniture, take a piece of walnut, make a fresh break in it and rub the nut meat on the scratch. Mix olive oil and iodine to colour scratches on furniture. Shoe polish (paste) will cover up scratches on furniture. Apply lightly and then buff. Lemon oil will cover up scratches. Dye scratches with iodine. SCORTCH Moisten the scorched area with water and place in the sun. If a fabric is washable and colourfast apply a solution of one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water. Scortch on woollens can sometimes be brushed or scraped off. Sprinkle with vinegar and wipe with a cloth. 214 «
