Dissolve soda in sour milk and add to first mixture. Add flour, salt and cornmeal. Turn into well-greased pan and bake in moderate oven until done. Dream Cake 1 c. flour 4, c. b-sugar VY, c. butter Mix well and bake like shortbread until golden brown. 2 eggs e Vanilla to flavor Y, t. b-p. 1% ec. b-sugar Y, c. cocoanut 3 T. flour Y, ec. walnuts chopped Pour this on hot shortbread. Return to oven and bake very slowly, perhaps 45 min. or | hour until the top layer is well set. Smack Cake 1!4 ec. flour Y, e. w-sugar 1 c. chopped nuts 2 egg yolks 1 t. b-p. 2 egg whites 1 ¢c. b-sugar VY, ec. butter Pinch of salt Take flour, white sugar, and butter and rub well into the flour, then add egg yolks well beaten, also vanilla and baking powder and mix altogether, which will be dry and crumbly. Put in a long’ greased pan. For the top of the cake, beat brown sugar, walnuts, and whites of eggs together and spread on top of cake. Bakeina moderate oven for 20 minutes. Chocolate Jelly Roll 4 eggs , t. b-powder Y, t. salt 1 t. vanilla 34 ¢. w-sugar, sifted 6 T. cake flour 6 T. cocoa dissolved Beat egg whites stiff, fold in sugar. Dissolve cocoa in hot water and cool. Add egg yolks, vanilla, cocoa, flour, b-powder and salt to egg whites. Bake in shallow pan, 10 by 16 in. for thirteen minutes. Spread with seven minute icing and roll as jelly roll. Crumb Cake 2 c. flour 1 c. sour milk 1 egg (beaten) 34 ¢. butter 1 t. soda 1 cup raisins 1 ec. w. sugar 1 t. cloves 1 ¢. currants 1 t. cinnamon Mix flour, butter and sugar—rub to crumbs. Take out | c. of mixture and set aside for icing. Mix remaining ingredients with remainder of crumbs and turn into cake pan. Sprinkle cup of crumbs over top of cake—put in moderate oven and bake. 113
