vide florescent-lighted fitting
rooms, washrooms for public and

WELL-LIGHTED

Great care has been taken to
assure excellent illumination of
the store. Unusually large plate
glass windows occupy almost the
entire front of the building, They
extend from wall to wall and al-
most to the floor level. As shown
in the picture below, additional
lighting is provided by a series
of 14 smaller windows which ex-
tend from the top of the show
windows to the ceiling of the store.
The ceiling is white which aids
reflection of light and there are
also several skylights inset in the
roof, Special lighting fixtures have

DISPLAY TABLES

A modern feature of the new
store will be the display of sea-
sonable merchandise and sale
specials on specially designed dis-
play tables. These tables, tinted
in buff and brown and with neu-
tral inlaid linoleum tops, have
been made by local craftsmen
and are utilized in both hardware
and drygoods departments, There
is very litfle shelving in evidence
and what wall stands there are
will be found to be of a new
type similar to designs used in
the newest’ Coast city stores.
They are also finished in match-
ing tones of buff and brown with
sections marked with wood block
letters.

With much new merchandise
still being received and arranged,
is. was impossible to secure ade-
quate interior views for this is-
sue but the several exterior views,
by day and by night, give a com-
prehensive idea of the attractive-

ley and the Coast cities are de-
scending this week in order to
congratulate him on the opening
of his fine new Hardware and
Drygoods Store, the largest pri-
vately-owned business of its
type in British Columbia.

PATENT DEVICE IS
INSTALLED AGAINST
“STEAMED” WINDOWS

A striking feature of the ex-
terior of the new store erected in
Abbotsford for Daly's Hardware
and Drygoods is the exceptionally
large expanse of plate glass show
windows. These huge windows not
only enabie unrestricted display
of seasonal merchanidse but also
provide excellent natural lighting
to the nearly 6500 square feet of
floor area. To protect this display
feature as well as ensure the ad-
vantages of the natural lighting,
a patent device has been installed
to prevent the windows from
“steaming” over when tempera-

writing on the wall,” another
store was opened in Abbotsford
whose agricultural future was
then still dimmed by its sawmill
industry. Expansion resulted in
additions of buildings and depart-
ments. And that is still the story.

The grocery stores were sold
and drygoods and. hardware de-
partments enlarged. Aggressive
management abetted by a divers-
ity of interest in community af-
fairs, caused more “growing
pains” and despite advent of an-
other war which took key mem-
bers to its ranks, the soldier who
had faced, undaunted, the Hun
hordes in Flanders also faced new
wartime economic stress and de-
clared, “We Carry On.”

And this, in brief tabloid style,
is the story of J. S. Daly, former
Sergt. Daly of the 49th Edmonton
Regiment in the First Great War,
and subsequently past president
of the Abbotsford & District Ath-
letic Association, the Abbotsford
& District Board of Trade, chair-
man and managing director of the
Sumas Co-o-perative Association
No. 2. (Abbotsford Cold  Stor-
age Plant) and other such pro-

It is understood that Black's
Drug Store will return to the west
side of town and occupy the cor-
ner building being vacated by
Daly's drygoods department. This
Move is likely to take place as
soon as the premises are avail-
able and can be renovated to suit
their new tenant. George Black is
unable, however, to set the date
of his move.

MSA RED CROSS
WILL BENEFIT

As this super edition of The
News goes to press it Is learn-
ed that J. S. Daly, proprietor of
the largest new store in MSA
history, is setting aside a per-
centage of the proceeds of the
Two-Day Sale which marks the
store opening this week, for the
benefit. of the MSA branch of
the Canadian Red Cross Society.
This report has been confirmed
by The News through a tele-
phone call to the branch secre-
tary. It has been confirmed by
Mr, Daly who, in admitting his
intention of doing this, states
he had not proposed the inform-
ation should become public until
after the sale had closed this
weekend and ‘he had turned the

money over to the Red Cross
News, however, believes

Mr. Daly is setting a public-spir-
ited eqample which should be
publicized in order that others
may also plan ways and means
of aiding the Red Cross, the
world’s most outstanding mercy
organization.

Staff of Daly's comprises no
less than a dozen men and women
all of whom are Canadian or Bri-
tish born. The division is nearly
50-50, but the balance favors the
men, although two young men en-
listed in the CASF. There are now
five women and seven men on the
sales and service forces directed
by the proprietor.

Office staff consists of the oldest
and youngest members in point
of service: Miss Edna Green of
Poplar, secretary-accountant, and
Miss Leona Prasloski of Alder-
grove, assistant bookkeeper. oO.
J. Bennett of Mission is manager
of the drygoods department and
Miss Julia Mitchell of Abbotsford
is in charge of ladies ready-to-
wear. A complete new depart-
ment is headed by Miss Christie
deVries of Gifford, it is Personal
Service.

Supplies; Lorne Carmichael, Mats-
