“Have you ever thought when you
make a purchase, of the tremendous
amount of combined capital, effort
machinery and man-power

And yet all the marvels of modern
manufacture would be useless if il
were not for the retailer.

He is the man in the front line, he
is the sounding board of public
needs, he is the man who knows
what Mr, Smith or Mrs. Jones wants,
and through him the manufacturer
exists,

Retailing, without a doubt, is our
greatest indus today. The prob-
lems of manufacturing are being
more and more pushed into the back-
ground by the problems of selling.

On the shovkeeper rests the heavy
responsiblity of prompting nev buy-
ing ideas, stimulating demand, find-
ing customers for a varied and ever
increasing stock.

Few people realize the great risks
the shopkeeper has to run, In order
to cater for all tastes, he has to
stock goods that he knows people will
buy, others that they might buy, and
some that there is a distinct possibil-
ity that they may never buy. lor in-
stance the retailer may have ved
a promise that there would be a vi-
gorous advertising 0

f the article, and
this may not have materialized.

Thus it is only through an exact
knowledge of the buying power ana
the specific preferences and preju-
dices of his immediate neighborhood
that he can reduve his risk to the
minimum

He is much more that a mere han-
der-out of goods He fulfills in fact
an invaluable function He is the buy-
ing agent for the community he
serves
Shrewd Buying Reduces Prices

Every housewife has seeu, in the
“slack” periods of the day, the shop-
keeper in an animated ana absorber
conversation with a smart young min
complete with a little brown bas.

That man has not gone into the
shop to buy, but to sell. He is the
manufacturers’ or wholesalers’ repre-
sentative and is probably selling to
the shopkeeper produce by the hund-
redweight produce that you will ey-
entually buy by the pound.

On the judgement and skill of the
retailer in dealing with these repre
sentatives—and there are literally
hundreds of them competing for his
approyal—depends not only his own

one of the greatest miracles of civili-

cal shop and go further afield. Yes,
even to the farthest corners of the
earth, to sunny Jamaica, exotic India
and the grim Northern seas.

We must see ships ploughing their
way across the oceans, bringing home
goods worth untold wealth from dis-
tant lands—goods that you will buy,
in attractive packages, for a few
pence oyer the counter. Indeed it is
through the show window that the
housewife see the word at her feet.
During the past few years, a reyo-
jution has been taking place in our
daily lives—one so gradual that many
of us have realized how profound a
change it has made, yet so great
that all have benefited by it.

Huge strides have been made in
the improvement and greater diver-
sity of everything we eat, drink and
use. We have a greater oice in all
these things than our grandfathers
ever dreamed of.

ACROSS HUNTINGDON BORDER
Exports totalling $2,000,000 passed

through the port of Huntingdon since
April 1, according to customs records
in the local office. Over 3,000 carlots
were cleared in the nine months, an
average of about rarlots a week. At
present lumber and shingles bulk lar-
gest in the varied list of exports, am-
ong which is included fish, fertiliz-
er, ores, and hardwood.

Imports, although not comparative
in quantity, have also increased in
proportion, being double that of the
year previously, or a total of about
1,500 carlots. Fruit has bulked large-
ly in these shipments, in which there
is a lull pending application of tariff
reductions, effective next week.

same number as in 1934, with a larg-
er proportion of Canadians crossing
the border this year.
