Every farmer should become familiar with Reward Wheat. To enable the farmer of Western Canada to study this very promising new wheat, the Dominion Government Cereal Division in the Spring of 1928 sent samples for trial to 467 farmers, This is considered the most promising wheat that has recently been brought out. It was originated by Dr. Saunders, who developed Marquis, which has meant many millions of dollars to the farmers of Western Canada. Its milling qualities are equal, if not superior, to Marquis; the flour is reported to be without spot or blemish; it is almost as early as Garnet; it has a stiff straw and is less liable to lodge. It has prize-winning qualities. It won first at Toronto Royal Fair in 1927. First in Chicago by Mr. Herman Trelle. Also reserve championship at Regina in 1928 by Mr. S. Larcombe. It is not classed as a rust-resisting wheat, but the stiff straw is less affected by rust than most wheats, and its earliness is a factor in escaping the rusts. It is not immune to root rot, but research work, it is hoped, will overcome this. The yield is not as high as Marquis, but with its high protein, its easier harvesting, its earliness in ripening, it should be a safer and more sure crop that on the average should bring much bigger returns in dollars to the district that cannot grow Marquis successfully. The Morden Experimental Farm considers Reward Wheat as the best wheat to grow on summerfallow for Southern Manitoba. Leading milling companies are advocating Reward Wheat. The test plots, also a two hundred and ninety-acre field at Dr. Knechtel’s farm at Souris show promise of a big early yield. This information is sufficient reason for being optimistic for the future of Reward Wheat. It is hoped that Reward Wheat will do much to bring back our reputation for the high pro- tein wheat that our best markets demand.
