84 British Columbia Women’s Institutes The UNESCO Gift Coupon Plan by which money was sent for training centres for girls in Ceylon was supported by British Columbia and $764.25 sent for this purpose. Some of these centres were visited by B.C. delegates who went to Ceylon for the A.C.W.W. meeting and great interest was taken in Ceylon as a result. ‘The Women’s ‘Training Institute in Mysore, India, was equipped with two sewing machines sent by B.C. members. Other projects carried out by the Institutes include donations to the “Save the Children” Fund, War Orphans of Korea, Codfish for Korea and Bread for Greece. ‘The U.N. Seminars have also been supported. Exchange Programmes include a detailed description of a regular W.1. meeting, with interesting local information which is sent to a corresponding meeting in another country. Successful Border picnics have been held for a number of years by the women of B.C. and counties across the American Boundary Line. These are held at the Peace Arch at Blaine, at the Okanagan Border and in the East and West Kootenays, while alternating between Vancouver Island and Port Angeles. Since these picnics have started, the women of Washington State have formed their State Home Demonstration Council and have become a constituent society of the Associated Country Women of the World. HOUSEHOLD HINTS To clean windows use tablespoon of coal-oil or vinegar in water, then polish with old newspaper. If a handful of salt is put in the rinse water clothes will not freeze to the line in cold weather. Brown sugar dissolved in a teaspoon of canned milk and brushed over pie crust makes a lovely golden glaze. When doing dirty jobs work on old newspapers if at all possible. Store matches in a tin container for safety. Ribbon or lace will dry flat after washing and no ironing is necessary if it is smoothed round a clean bottle until dry. Good lace should never be ironed. Moth balls placed where mice come will keep them away as they dislike the odor. To discourage a tough film forming on blanc mange and other cornstarch desserts, cover your puddings while hot, with waxed paper. Chill under cover.
