26 CARES MERINGUE SPICE CAKE ~- Mrs. Roy Mitchell. 5 tbls shortening 1 cup brown sugar 1 egg yolk 1 1/4 cups flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp cloves 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp soda 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp vanilla 2/3 cups sour milk Cream shortening well, add sugar and cream well add beaten egg yolk. Sift flour and measure, mix other dry ingredients, add alternately with sour milk to creamed mixture beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and mix well, pour in 8x8 pan. For top of cake beat egg white well, add 1/2 cup brown sugar and beat together. Spread on top of cake. Sprinkle with walnuts. Bake in 350 degrees oven for 45 min. GUM DROP CAKE - Mrs. H. Cousins 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup white sugar 2 eggs 1 cup thick apple sauce 1 cup raisins 1/2 1b gum drops 2 cups flour 1 scant tsp baking soda 1 scant tsp baking powder Cream the butter, add sugar gradually and cream together until light, and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well, .. Then add the apple sauce. Sift flour, baking powder and baking soda together and add with raisins and gum drops. Mix well. Bake in moderate oven until done (approx. 11/4 hrs.) ORANGE CAKE - Mrs. H.G. Kirkpatrick. l egg 2 cups flour 1 cup raisins 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 3/4 cups butter . 3/4 cups sour milk 1 tsp soda l]1 orange put through chopper (use juice too) Do not take out of pan till cold Glaze: Take 1/2 cup sugar and juice of 1 orange and pour over cake after it has been out of oven for 5 minutes.
