In planning the size of a gard- en, bear in mind that better re- sults can be obtained from care- ful cropping and subsequent at- tention of a small plot than by planting an area too large to be properly maintained. After the garden site has been chosen, one of the first things to consider is fertility. CROP SUCCESSION It is difficult to lay out any particular plan for the vegetable plot as everyone differs in their desires as to what they want to grow. It will be well to bear in mind certain established ideas tion is the seeding of the veget- able patch. In the first place, care should be taken that really good seed is bought, it costs no more than inferior seed, and the results obtained are without com- parison. Possibly the most com- mon mistake made in sowing seed is that of sowing too deeply. It would be well to follow care- fully the directions given on the packages. Also, much seed is wasted by sowing too thickly, which necessitates additional thinning and results in a wast- age of material. Moisture Control Where the vegetable patches are small or where seeds are planted in frames, moisture can be controlled to a large extent. An even moisture is desirable and can be obtained by cover- ing the newly-sown seed bed with sheets of paper to help prevent moisture evaporation. Constant examination of the seed beds is necessary since the paper should be removed oncé the seed has germi concerning the of plants, rotation, companionate cropping, etc. As a general rule plants are not grown in the same area year after year as it PACIFIC STAGE LINES Abbotsford to Vancouver Others dail For Your Freight or Express Use Pacific Stage Express or — Consolidated renee Lines— Fast Dependents Service Phone 241 has been found conducive to the spreading of diseases.
