Party... from page 1 provided free soft drinks and donated money for presents. Woolco provided the presents at near cost, and provided them wrapped with the children’s names on them. Abbotsford Community Services provided the list of children and issued invitations. : “The party went very well,” noted Personnel director Barry Bompas. “We plan to make it an annual event and extend it to Chilliwack next year.” Changes to admissions and standards procedures The Admissions and Standards Committee fine-tuned some policies at its latest meeting on Nov. 20. Part-time vocational program courses will now be included on students’ official transcript, if the program awards a citation. The committee is considering whether a “P’ grade would be accepted in a prerequisite course. Currently, the grading system policy states that a ‘P’ grade “does not necessarily permit the student to pursue another course for which the graded course was a prerequisite.” A motion to change “does not necessarily” to “does not, unless otherwise stated”, was passed by the committee. The committee agreed that “audit” status does not constitute a grade and so cannot contribute to the GPA calculation, which is used to determine registration priority in the Continuance in Program and Admissions policies. The committee recently welcomed Harvey McCullough as management and vocational area representative on the committee. Committee members are Jane Cannon, April Kamann, Sheryl Henderson, Rosalie Chappell, Harvey McCullough, Jack Gaston, Bob Bolton and Bill Cooke (chair). They meet in week two of the meeting schedule. If you have comments please pass them along Headlines/Dec. 18 199] Betty’s feast raises $575 The 50-odd people who enjoyed a variety of culinary delights at Betty Urquhart’s house last week helped put $575 into the coffers of the Salvation Army in Chilliwack. Some UCFV folks have also rallied around the welding student who lost his house and possessions to a fire. Karen Power reports that since an appeal was printed in Headlines last week, several people have called and promised to bring in clothes and household accessories. Trades staff, faculty and students had raised $315 earlier. Power is still accepting donations for the student and his family. Also, food bank boxes are still in place and waiting to be filled at the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses. MIS task force looks at options A Management Information Systems task force headed by Wayne Welsh is currently doing a “needs analysis” on systems at UCFV, particularly as they relate to student information. The variety of systems in place includes instruction-related systems (e.g. library, grade spreadsheets), student-related systems (e.g. registration, financial aid, calendar, CE program management) business-related systems (e.g. financial, inventory, photocopy, bookstore, desktop publishing, facilities), and others like word processing, electronic mail and mailing list systems. “We have entered a heavy growth phase and are diversifying by adding third and fourth year courses,” notes Welsh. “It’s critical that we look ahead to see if our systems will be able to handle the potential loads. There’s also a possibilty of working with other colleges.in a cooperative effort related to study and purchase of new: systems.” The task force has identified most of the systems in use at UCFV and has also discovered that while most systems work well independently, they generally do not work together well on many tasks that require data or information from several systems. Task force member Doug McDowell sent a memo to faculty requesting feedback on their use of computer systems at UCFV, and Welsh encourages everyone to respond to the memo. | “The recommendations we make will affect everyone in the long term,” says Welsh. “Systems are also expensive to replace and maintain, so it’s important to make good decisions. “We'll always want more out of our systems,” he adds. “We won’t be happy until people can utilize the data we’re already collecting in an easy way, and communicate electronically for a lot of different purposes.” TOTI:LTHET CENTRE OPEN HOUSE Thursday, Dec. 19 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Toti:lthet Centre & First Nations Tribal Justice Institute St. Mary’s Complex 34110 Lougheed Highway Mission B.C.
