Area Back Of Expansion Of Daly’s. In Abbotsford SECRETARY MISS EDNA GREEN who is the competent secretary- accountant and ofice manager of Daly's hardware and drygoods store. Miss Green has to her credit the most years of service with the firm of any member of the staff and has participated in its development from the crowded little “Mill Store” to its latest move into one of the most modern buildings in the province. Miss Green is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Green of Poplar, Mats- qui. An active member of the Poplar United church, she is also leader of the Canadian Girls in Training group. NEWEST MEMBER OF DALY STAFF Is FROM ALDERGROVE Miss Leona Prasloski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Prasloski +| botsford. of Abbotsford. The site of The News block, for% example, was only a wooded rav- ine, the highway was unpaved and wound through the timber limits being logged by the Abbotsford Lumber Co. Ltd., almost immed- jiately after it passed the Daly Grozery and Hardware stores of that time. That development has been sub- stantial and steady in the inter- vening years is evidént from the 1940 view of Abbotsford repro- duced on page 17 of this issue of THE NEWS. Construction of the large new block for the Daly Stores, Mr. Daly declares, is made necessary not only to accommo- date his present volume of busi- ness but because he is confident the Matsqui - Sumas - Abbotsford Area will continue to develop and increased facilities will be ‘essen- tial in order to adequately serve the growing population. In this connection it is interest- ing to note the forecast made at Chilliwack Exhibition two weeks ago by Hon. K. C. MacDonald, minister of agriculture in speak- ing before the Rotary Club lun- cheon on the fair grounds, Dr. MacDonald predicted that hun- dreds of British families will move to Canada and to British Columbia after the war is over, of Aldergrove, is the latest addi- tion to the staff of Daly’s in Ab- Miss Prasloski assists Miss Edna Green in the office and joined the staff a week before the removal to the large new store. baw CONGRATULATIONS TO AUTHORIZED feet Camp Stoves Table Stoves J. Daly established himself in business in the Fraser Valley fifteen years ago much of the present town of Abbotsford and its residential suburbs in Sumas and Matsqui was only a vision of men like himself. In faet big trees were cut down only a few feet from the building he now leaves several years after he moved from the Mill road store to the main street Two Of Staff Volunteer For War Service ISTANTS IN TWO DEPARTMENTS NOW TRAINING WITH CASF Every community in the Domin- ion has seen numbers of its keen, promising young men volunteer to defend the nation and empire from German aggression. Consequently any organization employing a num- ber of persons now has absentee members, In the MSA Area, Daly's is one of these and two re- cent and one former member of the staff are now in training with the CASF. It is interesting to re- call that the business giving dir- ect employment to a dozen per- sons today, owes its existence in part to the first Great War, a conflict for which the Germans were also to blame. J. S. Daly, the owner, js a veteran of the Great War and it was in seeking to re-establish himself in civilian life after being invalided, perman- ently crippled in action, that he came to B.C. and decided to be- gin life in the Fraser Valley. Ralph Fountain, son of Mrs. J. Fountain of Abbotsford, and form- erly Mr. Daly’s chief assistant in the hardware department, was a member of the Chilliwack Militia company of the Westminster Regi- ment (MG) when Gerntan mech- anized hordes crashed down upon Poland over a year ago. He vyol- unteered for active service, in~ cidently his brother Irvine with him, and is today Sergt. Fountain at present with the valley regi- ment at a Prairie training centre. Another man from the Daly staff enlisting is Jack Lamont, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lamont of Abbotsford. He has been with the store for nine years, latterly in the drygoods department, but is now with the Seaforths’ and also training on the Prairies. A former member of the Daly staff but one who will be remem- bered by many residents, Lorne Innis is with the Royal Engineers at an Eastern centre. He drove the Daly delivery truck for five years. “Y” BUREAU IS USED BY MANY SOLDIERS The Beaver Club in London costs approximately $4,500 per month to operate, and provides anextensive program of recreation, leave tours and other services to Canadians in uniform.
