SPARLING, Manager Abbotsford Branch. Phone 70 CANADIAN BANK OF COMMERCE OPENS BRANCH IN ABBOTSFORD A branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce is to be established in Ab- botsford, and a three-year lease signed on the Albert Lee store building, which is now undergoing interior changes in preparation for opening this week Manager of the Abbotsford branch will be B. E. Porritt, who has been at- tached to the New Westminster branch for the past six years. Mr. Porritt is now on the job, and will be joined by his wife and child shortly. A staff of four is anticipated. Since the Bank of Montreal closed out in Abbotsford five years ago, the Royal Bank branch here, under Mr. Hill, has been frequently rushed to the limit attending the hundreds of clients of this large district. Entry of the Canadian Bank of Commerce with a resident staff in Matsqui village pro- vided convenient and alternative: faci- lities for residents there. Observers of this deyeloping competition between the two banking institutions contended that it ended the business compromise or agreement which is said to exist be- tween Canadian banks relative to es- tablishment of rivalling branches in rural communities. This opinion was further strengthened when the Royal Bank recently started a branch in Mis- sion, providing that district with the adequate banking facilities necessary to its agricultural and industrial pro- gress, At the same time, good business is obviously the main consideration in the Bank of Commerce's establishment here. The district has been thorough- ly surveyed for several weeks by Campbell of the Vancouver staff, and these men are in agreement that Ab- botsford not only affords a rich bank- ing opportunity at present, but offers exceptional promise in the near future, with development of Sumas and the logged-off areas neighboring Poplar and Peardonyille. “The industrial and agricultural progress of this fine dis- trict warrants provision of more ade- quate banking facilities’ was the ex- pressed opinion of Mr. Bonallie, who considers Abbotsford one of the fastest- growing districts in British Columbia. PEARDONVILLE MAN KILLED IN VANCOUVER ISLAND CAMP Friends of Mr. Frank Tracey, for- merly of Peardonyille, were shocked to hear of his fatal accident last Thurs- day in a logging camp near Duncan, Vancouver Island.
