Electric Agricultural Di An effort to develop early-maturing ‘hogs of good quality is being made by the Provincial Government Colony Farm at Hssondale, B.C., where a swine-recording system has been in practice since 1937. This program forms the basis of the farm’s selective breeding schedule which to date has proven a tremendoustsuccess. Frank Clark, M.S.A., assistant superintendent of the farm, under whose supervision the plan is being carried out, uses a large metal punch which pierces the piglet’s ear and leaves its tattoo mark of serial numbers. Piglets are tattooed before they are eight weeks old as Yequired by the Canadian Livestock records, The tattoos tell the piglet’s sire and dam, its date of birth and from this information the age of the animal is able to be known when it is butchered and the best breeding combinations for early maturity with necessary market weights. Colony Farm supplies Essondale mental hospital with parece: pork, mill and most of its green vegetables for the institution’s daily total of 12,000 meals. Blectric power is used to a major extent throughout the farm’s many phases, helping to accomplish this tremendous job. FSM-10 for $95. AID TO GROWING ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS IN M-S-A GARDENS The honeysuckle, lilac, and mock orange in their improved varieties are still the most popular shrubs for general use in Canada, but they are no longer all-sufficient for Canadian gardens of the present day. At the same time, the plan- ning, planting, or perfecting of a garden calls for expert knowledge. The use of shrubs to give the best artistic effect, the kind of shrubs to select, their propagation and care both before and after plant- ing are only a few of the principal factors to be considered. Consider- able assistance in these and other problems connected with ornamen- tal shrubs and woody climbers most commonly used for landscape purposes throughout Canada will be found in the well illustrated bulletin No. 100 on this subject. It can be obtained from the Publicity and Extension Division, Dominion Department of Agriculture, Ottawa. Hot, steaming water, always on tap, is essential for the modern farm dairy. Mel Fadden, Straiten road, and H, Quadling of Sumas Pumps have both added these con- veniences to their dairies. G. A. Paull and Sons Ltd., of Matsqui recently changed over their pumping unit to a new-style plunger system that is giving ex- cellent service. operating the Farm on the WATER FOR RABBITS In the feeding of rabbits, the necessity of liberally supplying the does with water cannot be too greatly emphasized, as neglect of this precaution has caused the loss on many a good litter, says the bulletin"The Feeding of Rabbits” which can be obtained from Pub- licity and Extension Division, Do- minion Department of Agricul- ture, Ottawa. FARM {TEMS In the production of baby chicks, the incubator has outstripped the setting hen in efficiency, labour economy, and general care. The present-day system of hand- ling milk and dairy products is al- most entirely the result of knowl- edge based on research in bac- teriology. The soil chemist and the field crop specialist are able to deter- mine the amount and kind of plant food needed for various crops on various soils and to recommend fertilizers that will produce profit- able crops.
