ABBOTSFURD, SUMAS AND MATSOVT NEWS Successful Colonization Means Increased Tiinigratin The continued development, progress and prosperity of Canada is depend- ent upon a continuing increase In population, and having now entered upon the second quarter of “Canada’s Centuty” selves and thelr country that all it is of primo importance to them- Canadians take a keen and active interest in promoting this, the Dominion’s first It has, hewever, become increasingly evident during the past few years that the problem that confronts Canada in the fleld of immigration is not so colonization If the Parilament saw fit to take down all the bars to immi and greatest asset. much immigration itself*as Federal Government and ration there is hardly any question but that very large numbers of people from E uropean countries would come to Canada. But it is open to serious question whether an unrestricte inflow of people would be in the best interests of the d Doniinion, or of these incoming people themselves Neither Government and Parliament, nor Canadfans in general, are of the opinion that such an unrestricted influx of people would be desirable. The opinion still prevails, and wisely so, that there must be selection of immi- | grants, although it is now recognized that theré can well be, and ought to be, some rélaxation of the restrictions amipnsey during these years immediately following the war. While, therefore, immigration regulations will undoubtedly be modified, “nd efforts put forth to secure a larger number of people in this and succeed- ing years, the main effort of the Dominfon Government, transportation com- ead all bodies primarily interested in the settlement of our vacant are will be in the direction of successful and therefore permanent gettle: ment; in a word, the promotion of colonization rather than the mere encour- ugement of the immigration of people to Canada. . Past experience establishes the wisdom and necessity of such a policy. Carrying it into effect, however, cannot be left solely to Government. It will call for the active interest and’ participation of the whole people of Canada, and may well constitute one of the major activities of all organizations such as Boards of Trade, Canadjan Clubs, the various service clubs, farmers’ organ- izations, churches, Community Clubs, and all kindred organizations. Successful colonization means the placing of new where their Jabors will be crowned-with success, and neighbors will be congenial, where sary to the making of happy, panies settlers in districts where their surroundings they will not lack the éssentlals presperous, contented homes, Late In 1924 the Swiss Settl crganized in Canada under a Dominion Charter with headq ters in Montreal, with the object of encouraging Swiss settlement in Canada. This Soclety, in its first year, has been markedly successful in securing the support, Anan- elal and otherwise, of prominent people throughout Canada, in Switzerland and | the United States. It is engaged in getting in touch with all Swiss now resi dient in Canada and ascertaining the measure of their suceéss her lems which confronted them and how they were overcome, the problems! and difficuities still to be overcome. The Society aims to help them, but at thé same time to make lnown to prospective immigrants from Swiizerland the actual experiences and successés of thelr countrymen in Canada, and fo is- sist such new immigrants to locate in desirable communities on arrival here and to help them in all possible ways to succeed. That is, there is an organ- ized Soclety to which all Swiss in Canada can turn for helpful advice and assistance. ; Reference may be made to another development which is bound to have ® permanently beneficial colonization effect. In its peace-time work the Canadian Red Cross Society dims at the improvement of heaith, the preven- lon of disease, and the mitigation of suffering. In its efforts in these direc lions it has taken particular notice of the need of nursing care for expectant | mothers and children, and sick and accident cases among the new settlers in remote and pioneer districts where doctors are few in number and far distant from the settlers’ homes, and where as yet the population is, too small to war- nece To cite one example. 1ent Soclety was , the prob- } | H | | rant the establishment oMhospitals.
