The attendance, unfortunately, was small, but those present were treated to renditions by the band, as well as solos, duets and quartettes by band members. The program was augment- ed by recitations from Mrs. Cameron and violin solos by L. Bevan. Following the performance, the band enjoyed a luncheon at the Unit- ed church hall. BRITAIN’S HISTORIC HOUSE «.in a. quiet corner of London stands a dingy old house whence for 200 years have come political deci- sions that have changed the map of the world . . .No. 10 Downing Strret . the number and name symbolize Britain’s might and majesty, and the pirit of the dignified ancient mansion is a solemn “we are not fooling’’. . Last year, No.10 Downing Street— home of British Prime Ministers— completed two centuries of public ser- vice, for it was on Sept. 22, 1735, that Sir Robert Walpole took up his resi- dence there. Since that day history has been Unfolded in this brick-faced house, devoid of ornament to the point of ugliness and bounded by dingy railings. . In 1767, Lord North, the Prime Minister, who was largely responsible for the war which gave the American Colonies their independence, took up residence at No, 10, and it was there that) all the decisions that led to the conflict were made. Altogether, No. 10 has had since 1735 thirty-nine tenants, of whom fourteen have been Prime Ministers, eleven Chancellors of the Exchequer, and the others relatives, or the rela- tives of Prime Ministers. About 50 child- ren with their parents and friends had a very enjoyable evening. have occurred at No.’10 would be to write the political history of England. For it is not only the home and the office of the Prime Minister, but con- tains the room where Cabinet meet- ings have been held for 150 years. It is the most rambling residence conceivable, and without a guide one could never find the way about. And it is so big that an assembly could be tucked away in one room and nothing known about it at the other end of the premises. Many of the rooms, and of course the passages are gloomy. Until Mrs. Asquith came to live there when her husband became Prime Minister in 1908, there was not even a bathroom in the house. Now there are three. Frankly, it is not a house in which any one would choose to live, and whenever Parliament was not sitting, Ramsay MacDonald, when he had the place, stayed as much as he could at his private house at Hampstead and at the week-end went off to Chequers, the official country residence of the Prime Minister. But who would ever contemplate replacing No. 10 so long as it will stand? An English politician once referred to the Thames as “liquid his- tory.” No. 10 Downing street is as- suredly “solid history". Could there be a ‘better symbol of the continuity of English history, ana of the solidity and strength of Eng- land? That is why No. 10 is secure. Depressing as it may be as a residence inconvenient and out-of-date as it may be for the transaction of official busi- ness, it presumably will remain the home of English Premiers for many more years to come, and even then survive for many more years as a national museum. — Condensed from New York Times. wae GRGHEED Litt “‘Winter Time Is Meat Time’’ PROFESSIONAL _YARWOOD & DURRANT BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS NOTARIES PUBLIO BRANCH OFICE AT ABBOTSFORL Open Bvyery Friday Vancouver Offices— Rooms 3 & 4, 423 Hamilton Street McAlpine & McAlpine BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Abbotsford office—near B, C.
