PAGE SIXTEEN ABBOTSFORD, SUMAS & MATSQUI NEWS a tah ae iTS I A ay DS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 180 New ‘Abbotsford Store Is Incorporates B est Ideas Of Noted Coast Stores Mr. Daly’s intentions became known, many dis- cussions over a period of mouths centred on the probable use of the valuable site in the heart of Abbotsford would eventually be put. Few persons, howev vistialized a building with so at- tractive au exterior front by day and by night as the new Daly’s Store presents. The artist’s conception on this page, drawn from plans and description, gives an impression of the appear- ance of the store at night. By daylight the new store is also a striking acquisition to Abbotsford’s main street. For. more than a year before% Jaunchin Mr. Daly y to the require- ments ot the new store he had All New jong proposed to build to accom his expanding bus.ness in modate Abbotsford. The former large garage on the site was first demolished and pre- parations made for a modern building. Progress of the work was followed with much interest during the three months of con- struction and finishing the interior of the new store. With a frontage of 58 feet and a depth of 110 feet, the design permits a maximum of sales floor space. To utilize this to best ad- vantage meant keeping the num- ber of centre pillars supporting the roof to a minimum. Largest possible show windows both to assure a maximum of natural lighting within the store and also to display*as much as poss:ble of the interior to “window shoppers” and passersby, complicated the construction problem but greatly enhance the store. . Incidently the floor area, in excess of 6000 square feet, is nearly double the floor area of the two buildings just vacated. More detailed descriptions of the building and its interior arrange -ments and service features will be founf on other pages of THENEWS which, with a record size edition, celebrates with the rest of. the MSA Area the opening of what many visiting business men this one of the week state is most modern stores in British Columbia. CANADIAN Fixtures In Store MSA CRAFTSMEN MAKE STRIKING CABINETS AND DISPLAY TABLES From designs and ideas pro- vided by the most modern stores in the larger Coast cities MSA carpenters and cabinetmakers have been working for days building and erecting the display tables and wall cabinets for Daly's. West half of the new store is devoted to Daly's Hardware, as in the old premises. Major appliances such as electric refrigerators, ranges, heaters, radios and wash- ing machines occupy the fore part and enjoy the advantages of the big display windows on this side of the big store. Wall cabinets and display tables range back seemingly for the greater part of the 110-foot depth of the store. Modern in design, they are painted with a special “store mixture” of Martin-Senour paint in shades of buff and brown. Raised, wood block letters iden- tify the classes of hardware stocked in the long wall cabinet which has special sections rang- ing from guns and tools to build- ers’ hardware. There are also 60 or more specially-designed bins and drawers for other stock. Dis- play tables, on which seasonal goods or current specials will be featured, have inlaid linoleum ‘tops of a neutral shade. Many have the stock shelves beneath enclosed with cabinet-type doors with hard- ware in harmonizing styles. Daly's Drygoods, occupying the east side of the big store, is div- ided into three main separtments: womens’ wear, lingerie, hosiery, ete., at the front; men’s wear in the centre, and a large shoe de- Ultra-Modern HOW NEW ABBOTSFORD STORE APPEARS AT NIGHT Modern interior of the new Daly Store in Abbotsford is inviting- ly enhanced by the use of the latest development in exterior display. The combination of the modern, brilliant colors and added intensity of the flourescent zeon tubing createsan unusually attractive effe+t. EVEN TEMPERATURE Workmen who have been com- pleting the interior fittings of Daly’s new store in Abbotsford during recent weeks have noted that there is practfcally no varia- tion in temperature between night and morning. They estimate that the big store is only three degrees warmer at 5 p.m. “quitting time” than when they began work at 8 o'clock in the morning. DALY’S, IN NEW STORE, BECOMES NEIGHBOR OF FORMER DEPARTMENT When J. S. Daly decided several years ago to concentrate on but two departments of merchandising service, hardware and drygoods, he disposed of the grocery store to M. C. Walker, then manager of this department. Mr. Walker moved the grocery to its present location on Essendene Avenue in the Hotel Atangard Block where as M. C. Walker & Co., it has continued to develop under his able management and with the assistance of his son and daughter. It is probably unique in the his- tory of business development that the business of which it was once part should now become a big neighbor of the grocery, now a lusty and independent business in its own right. Mr. Walker, it will be noticed on Paxe 10, is one of partment at the back. The chos- en color tones of the store are used to advantage in the drygoods section and similar display tables to those in the hardware are ef- fectively grouped for convenient presentation of styles and fashion. Typical of a modern store and, incidentally, of the owner in this instance, it is noticed that there is no waste space. The back of the centre shelves of the shoe de- partment form a display panel for the many Abhotsford and district business men who extend congrat- ulations to Mr. Daly. linoleum and similar pattern ma- ’ terial.
