Frost when cool with a butter icing. DATE SLICES 6 tbsp butter 2 egg yolks 14% cup flour Yy tsp salt 14 cup sugar 7 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp baking powder Mix in order given. Pat into greased pan, larger than 9” square. Bake 10 - 15 minutes. Filling: 114 cup chopped dates 34 cup water 3 tbsp sugar Y tsp cinnamon Cook until thick. Topping: 2 egg whites 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup chopped nuts pinch of salt Spread date mixture on first mixture in pan. Beat egg whites stiff, adding sugar gradually. Beat until thick. Spread on top of date mixture. Nuts may be put in or on top of this mixture. I prefer slivered almond spread on top. Bake in moderate oven 25 minutes, or until done. COCOANUT SLICE 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour 2 eggs 2 tbsp icing sugar 1144 cup brown sugar Y% cup shortening 14 cup cocoanut Y% cup butter or margarine 1 cup chopped walnuts 2 tbsp flour Y tsp salt Y tsp baking powder Mix together flour and icing sugar. Add butter and shortening. Cut in as for pastry. Press into 8” x 8” greased pan. Bake in moderate oven 350 deg. for 15 minutes. Cool. Beat eggs light. Add sugar, cocoanut, walnuts. Sift dry ingredients into the mixture. Pour over baked crust. Return to oven for 40 minutes or till done. NO-BAKE OPERA SLICES 30 marshmallows cut in 4’s 1 cup chopped nuts 40 Graham wafers rolled fine 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 pkg. cherries Place in large bowl and mix well. Divide into 3 rolls. Roll in fine cocoanut, then roll in wax paper and place in fridge. Slice to serve.
