No. 604 BURNT SUGAR CAKE 1% cups sugar 2 tsp. baking powder % cup butter 1 cup water 3 eggs (beaten separately) 3 tsp. burnt sugar liquid 2% cups sifted cake flour 1 tsp. vanilla Cream butter and sugar, add egg yolk and beat. Sift flour, measure and add salt and baking powder and resift. Cream shorten- ing and sugar, blend in egg yolks and vanilla. Add milk and sugar syrup alternately with sifted flour. Fold into batter stiffly beaten egg whites. Bake in two 9” layer cake tins in 350° oven for 40-50 minutes. No. 802 BUTTERLESS, EGGLESS, MILKLESS CAKE Put into a saucepan and boil for three minutes: 1 cup white sugar 1 tsp. cloves 1 cup water % tsp. salt 1 or 2 cups raisins % tsp. nutmeg % cup lard Remove from heat and let cool then add: 2 cups flour 1 tsp. soda dissolved in a little % tsp. baking powder hot water Bake for 45 minutes at 325° F. This cake can be made and stored as it keeps well. Mrs. Howard Stafford, Athabasca F.W.U.A. No. 301 CANDY CAKE 1 cup brown sugar Boil 5 or 6 minutes % cup butter Add: 1 tsp. soda and 1 tsp. vanilla.
