Cream butter and sugar, add % cup of milk, beating well after adding it. Add dry ingredients alter- — with remaining cup of milk. Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold gently into batter. Variation: Omit 4% cup milk and add %4 cup glazed cherries and % cup glazed pineapple. Bake in moderate oven 365° to 375° F. in three 9-inch layer pans. Test with toothpick in about 15 minutes.
