When World War II was at its height, the women of Lavington formed a club, and named themselves the Lavington Work Group. Women of all ages were represented from the newest bride to a vigorous and active member who had reached the age of 72. The first project was to organize a success-~ ful bazaar, no mean feat in that time of shortages. The proceeds were used to provide comforts for Lavington boys serving in the forces and scattered all over the world. When the Community Hall was built after the war was over, The Lavington Work Group took over the kitchen area, decorating and equipping it. Each year a sizeable dona- tion was made to the Hall Committee to go towards paying off the Mortgage. For many years members of the Work Group canvassed for the Red Cross and sold poppies for Remembrance Day. No request for charitable donations, either for public charity appeals or to quietly relieve distress in the Community, has ever been turned down. Money has been raised for these charities in the ways natural to a group of women ~ our Annual Spring Tea, card parties, dances and catering to banquets. In the past few years, many of these particular fund raising activities have been taken over by a younger group of women, with the excep- tion of the Spring Tea. In addition to supporting chari- table appeals, the Work Group now makes quilts and layettes and collects good used clothing for the Unitarian Service Committee. Our own Centennial project is the erection of a Wishing Well type of drinking fountain in the Lavington Park. We support all community endeavours in every way we can. FR |] DB 2 - Lavington, B.C.
