As I am interested in the area of popular culture, and as I want to _ integrate some Japanese cultural products into my advertising and public relations ~ courses, I collected many Japanese magazines and popular books (manga). As well, I recorded many television programs and commercials that I can integrate into my future lectures. In this regard, many of. my Takudai students, and the friends of . my children, acted as guides through the maze of Japanese popular culture. Internationalizing the campus The Internationalization committee at UCFYV is up and running again. The committee plans a survey of faculty this semester to get their input into activities and to determine whether there are others in the institution who may be interested in joining the committee. After the survey, there will be a published compilation of International and Internationalization activities ongoing at UCFV. The committee chair is Sociology’s Stephen Piper. By Barbara Salingré, DRC How many of you get frustrated when, while taking in information through your senses, you experience difficulties figuring out what the information means, or filing and retrieving it from memory? At a recent workshop sponsored by the Teaching and Learning Centre and the Disability Resource Centre, faculty and staff explored many of the difficulties that students encounter when their learning style does not fit the “norm”. Connie Ferschweiler, a member of the Learning Disabilities Association of B.C. anda learning assistance teacher, led workshop participants though a variety of simulations -- designed to illustrate what it’s like to learn. . with a learning disability. These experiences included the use of mirrors, graphics, abstract forms, and reading passages. The curriculum comes from the Learning Disabilities Association and has been adapted from a curriculum/video called FAT City (Fear Anxiety and Tension). This fully booked session was very well received by all participants and it was | ~ recommended that it be offered again in the fall. United Way appeal begins You’ll be hearing soon from the UCFV United Way committee, which will be launching its annual appeal in concert with the United Way of the Fraser Valley. The United Way campaign runs until December 31. Last year UCFV just squeaked over the its goal of raising $20,000 for the United Way. The general campaign met its goal of raising $500,000 last year, and has upped the ante to.$550,000 this year.
