The Cascades placed sixth in the eight-team tourney. “We were pleased with the team but not with the result,” says Fast of his young — team’s showing (they have only three returning players). In league play, the Cascades tied Okanagan in their first game. The women’s team, coached by Fast’s son Tom, defeated Okanagan 2-1. Personnel director Barry Bompas estimates that if everyone who works for UCFYV gave an hour’s pay, the goal of $17,000 could be met easily. The donation and participation goals were set by a number of UCFV people interested in the United Way. One way of encouraging participation is interdepartmental competition. Personnel, which administers the United Way campaign for UCFV, will tabulate the donations of different divisions and announce the winners. The Academic - and Career divisions will compete against one another, as will Educational Support and Continuing Education, and the President’s office and the Bursar’s office. “We tried to match up divisions with a similar number of employees,” says Bompas. Members of the division with the highest participation rate in each competition who themselves participated will be eligible for a draw for a Cross pen worth around $50, - donated by a supplier. Bompas acknowledges that not everyone agrees with the United Way, but stresses that donating through this mechanism allows UCFV employees as a group to give something back to the community. Personnel officer Carole Hardy adds that your donation doesn’t have to be to the United Way or one of its member charities — you can also designate your favourite non-member charity. Your donation will then count towards the United Way total and be distributed by the United Way. Using this method allows you to donate through payroll deductions instead of one lump sum.
