It was a theme in every pulpit and most of the churches had special music that har- monized with the occasion. The services at St. Ann’s Catholic church every morning during Lent brought out many worshippers as did also the services every Friday and Sunday evening during the same per- iod. On Sunday last the church was crowded when High Miss was celeb- rated. Large congregations attended the services in Trinity United church. In the morning communion was observed. The evening service was largely chor- al, the choir rendering aster anthems. Mrs. W. Coutts sang “That Beautiful Land” and Rey, T. S Paton sang “Open the Gates of the Temple.” The large congregation sang heartily the special Faster hymns and the minister spoke briefly on the subject, “Ye Shall Live Also.” The Church of England, Church of ;| MUNICIPAL WOODYARDS MAY Jed by a letter of explanation will be BE ESTABLISHED IN MATSQUI Matsqui municipal council held thelr regular meeting in the munteipal hall last Saturday, with problems of dest itution and unemployment the most pressing cnse: of destitution in the municipality, a proposal was made for the establish- ment of wood yards, each ward to open a woodcutting area, where the owner Is willing to let the wood go for the piling of the brush. The municipality y sixty cents a rick for fir wood ents for hardwood, everything sut to four inches diameter and brush piled for burning.. The council will sell the wood and offer more work as the wood is sold. Only rex- istered men will be allowed this work. Councillor Goodchild resumed his place following his re-election, and stated that. since the unemployment relief work had been shared equally among the four wards, and that his} walLTER CURTIS AWARDED ward had less registered destitute than other wards, he Was now prepared to accept men from other wards in equal proportions until his relief allowance was used up. The rest of the council found the arrangement suitable and Councillor Keay will send the first gang from ward two. iy The council severely criticized the action of the government in throwing open for settlement areas where the soil is too poor to raise good crops. Reeve Cruickshank and Councillor Kettle had inspected each of the 25 blocks of 20 acres each at Poplar, where a small house and well will be t on each and sold for $500. They found gravel at a depth of 18 Inches on the places, and the ground densely covered with stumps. » Reeve Cruickshank stated that: "It is utterly impossible for a family to find a living on such a place, and by next fall everyone will be a charge on ", A telegram, follow- sent to the premier.
