The Committee also heard an update on the issue of the proposed name of the new university college. They unanimously approved a recommendation to the Board that the name University College of the Fraser Valley be used on all public and promotional information. It was agreed that the strong community response in support of the proposal was closely associated with the name. The College Board discussed the name change at its meeting on September 10. Discussion also touched on the need to investigate more closely how things are done at other colleges. Reid College in Oregon and Puget Sound College in Washington and Trent University were offered as possibilities. Jack Gaston reminded the Committee that one of the things that will make UCFV unique is “developing the ‘laddering’ concept that is the marriage of career and academic programs.” Community Coalition representative Jaclyn Rea expressed thanks for being asked to join the Access Committee. “We are another resource you can draw on,” said Rea. The Access Committee meeting of Sept. 6 further defined the process by which the first degrees will be decided and developed. An Arts degree subcommittee was proposed. It will consist of five members including one from English, and the . department head and a faculty member from each of Humanities and Social Sciences. A Science degree subcommittee consisting of one representative from Math and Computing and three from the Natural Sciences was also proposed. Considerable discussion then revolved around the importance of ensuring that issues of interest to the development Career/ Technical degrees also be represented on the Arts and Science subcommittees. Academic,Career/tech links urged Dean Dick Bate said there were “real opportunities” to build a unique program profile by ensuring the linkages between the academic and career programs were maintained and developed. President Peter Jones supported this, saying,” I think there is market for university colleges to serve people who want a career entry degree.” “T don’t think we should develop any BA or BSc without consideration of the career programs we want to offer,” said Jones. The Committee approved the formation of the Arts and Science subcommittees with the addition of one representative on each from the Career/Technical area. Bate introduced a tentative grid indicating the most likely degree programs to be offered. Among them, the Social Work and Criminal Justice degrees are proposed for September ’92 and Computer Information Systems, Business Administration and Aviation are proposed for September ’93. The formation of a subcommittee to develop plans for each of these degree programs was approved. Membership will consist of the program head, a department member, an external advisory committee member and two others (including one from the academic area).
