Mud invariably accumulates about the barn doorways and yard, Definite discomfort to the cows and a “headache” to the farmer is the continuous chapping crack- ing of cows’ teats as a result of walking through muddy yards. Cleanliness is imperative in the treatment of this condition. The udder and teats should be cleaned before each milking and then milked with dry hands. Af- ter completion of the milking car- bolized vaseline may be applied to keep in check further chapping and cracking of the teats. Often the teats become quite sore and need additional treatment of a mild boric acid solution, to be followed with a mixture of one Part tincture of iodine to 3 parts vaseline. The main care is to check the herd often and apply a vaseline or suitable salve to prevent the condition from reaching a difficult state of healing. A further consideration for the farmer in the fall season is the stabling of his livestock. Before cattle are put in the stables for the winter period a thorough job of barn cleaning should take place. If the barnis thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and whitewashed, there is less probability of common winter dis- eases becoming troublesome; and the general appearance of th stable is greatly improved. Pp! e|webs r a walls, Now that fall rains are just around the corner, every dairy- The stable boards should be tested in order that rotten or decayed boards may be discarded, For washing down the floors, a solution of one can of lye to10 gallons of water is a suitable solution. The use of a long-hand- led brush in this operation does not require the hands to be in contact with the strong lye solu- tion. The floors may then be sprayed with a suitable and re- commended commercial disinfec- tant. Custom whitewashing today is available quite cheaply to the far- mer. However for small quarters a homemade job is found quite satisfactory and the whitewash may be applied by brush if a pres- sure system is not available.
