One of the most important syb- jects discussed was that of lighting rates and the cost of installation, particularly as affecting the rurel parts of the Valley. Explanations ur repr of the company not having proved satis~ factory, the matter is awaiting cpr- tain statistics and a report from the Company's president after whi¢h, it is proposed to arrange a meeting of Reeves and Commissioners of fhe various Municipalities affected,/ to place the protest before the company A letter from the B. ©, Auto Club, requesting the Board's endorsation of an appeal to have auto licende fees reduced, was filed. It was felt that the need for good roads, and the fact that the municipalities derive direct benefit from license fees, jus- tified this action. A resolution was passed to the ef- fect that the Dominion Government should be asked to pay hospi ization of returned soldiers, which now falls upon the municipalities. It was pointed out that in one jin- stance out of forty-two men in a hospital ward, over thirty were fe- turned men who did not enlist frgm British Columbia, and that a large proportion of the cost of their hos- pitalization would fall upon the mun- icipality or city, While their condit- fon was directly due to their war services. Splendid samples of flax and hemp, stated. by authorities at Ot tawa to be as fine as any grown in the world, were presented from the experimental farm at Agassiz. It was found that, although B. C. rope manufacturers would be glad to ob- tain hemp locally grown, there is at present no industry in Canada that would purchase flax. Efforts are be- ing made to induce farmers to grow small areas of flax in various local- ities and in the meantime there is a MEN’S WOOL SHIRTS, very dressy in appearance, reg. $2.75.. $195 PENMAN’S 95 SHIRTS AND $]- 90 . They will come automatically, not because Dr. Shortt recommended them only... Density and ‘ diversity are the tua factors that are working for t the vacant spaces around system serves more people the charge will come down. In 1917, the domestic lighting rate in Van- couver was 8.8 cents net plus 15 cents meter rent, and 60 kilowatt hours there- fore cost $5.43. Today in a house of 1500 square feet, this current would cost only $2.00, a reductign of 63 per cent, The policy of the B, C. Electric, as repeat- edly stated, is to give the public the best possible service at the lowest possible cost. Wherever it has been possible to do so by reason of improved conditions, such as greater density of population, we have given the public reductions in rates, though other living costs have mounted upward. The record of reductions bears out the com- Pany’s sincerity in its statement of 12 years ago tliat “cheaper lighting rates are coming for Vancouver,” of a linen factory being established when business condit-| fons return to normal. The case of a largely increased li- cence fee for Veterans’ Beer Clubs was cited. It was pointed out that the funds of the clubs were entirely used for charity, and that the fees now charged simply take away $500 from that purpose, which will have to come from municipal taxation in- stead.
