But it was not enough. The local situation is very critical ..scores of worthy men and youths walk the town and country with no income whatever, th no employ= ment, and no immediate prospects of a job, They are willing to work for as low as 25 cents an hour—surely the minimum upon which an adult can sustain himself, without cunsider- ing a possible family. Is there not something you can do to give EMPLOYMENT? These mee do not want charity, they want work. . Have you a shed to be built, a fence that needs repair, a house to paint, to improve, some brushing to clear that lot, a basement to dig— anything giving work to active men willing to give an honest day's work for a very low wage ? If you plan to build anything, make anything, buy anything—DO IT NOW. Governments may dilly-dally, and officialdom hedge, but men must have work if children are to eat. Try find employment, no matter how, little, until spring brings re of relief from the prevailing indus- trial stagnation. Make the Poor Poorer Two per cent of Americans own 60 ber cent of the wealth. Sixty-five per cent of Americans own only 5 per cent of the wealth. The proportion is about the same in Canada. Top-heavy government must be sus- tained, and relief moneys must also come from the common people. So we already see higher taxes looming, in the form of gasoline taxes, amusement taxes, liquor taxes, “income” taxes, and anything or everything the average working man or woman can be assessed for. Today the Canadian people, although privileged to call one of the finest ana richest countries out-of-doors their own, cannot show more than a negligi- ble per capita “wealth.” Despolling of our natural resources by foreign profiteers, control of basic industries and public utilities in the hands of a small, but powerful haste appointed a stipendary magistrate for the Sumas district. Now its “Broaden the basis of taxa- tion”—that is: Tax the poor more and the rich less. Well, thank goodness, this winter of our discontent will soon be over, Is McKenzie King Wrong Dear Sir; In an address in Winnipeg on January 12, the Right Honorable McKenzie King asserted that the Prime Minister must reduce the tariff and change the “Canada First” policy. Both tariff and policy are measures of self-protection, resulting from in- ternational competition, waged by means of finance. McKenzie King is wrong. Until goyernent business is based on co-operation instead of com-= petition, Canada must protect herself, ‘Tariffs should be used for purposes of mutually fair trading, as is being attempted by Canada today; not for purposes of greed aggressiveness, as has been done by the United States. Mr. King also claims that the Prime Minister acts first and thinks after- wards, Well, at least he does act; he does something about it Some Prime Ministers were apparently afraid to act at all, and without action, thoughts are worthless. Now if both of them would just get active, and take the “ism! out of capitalism, Canada would soon be on top of the world, We can’t do without capital, of course, but it must be Canada’s servant, not her master, The life-blood of Canada is her people not her money. If part of her undernourished, the whole body is affected; it will become eee morally, mentally and DEY AGe The “{sm"—the ideallsm—the wor- stip of the golden calf (or bullion) is the curse of the world.
