MATRIMONIAL CAKE. 2 cups flour. 2 cups oatmeal. 1 cup brown sugar. 1 cup butter. 14 teaspoon salt. 14 teaspoon soda. Mix as for pie crust, divide this mixture into two parts and bake with the following filling: Boil— 14 lb. dates. 14 cup brown sugar. 1 tablespoon lemon juice. MATRIMONIAL CAKE. 234 cups oatmeal (fine). 1 cup flour and teaspoon soda, sifted. 3%, cup melted butter. 1 cup brown sugar. Mix first three ingredients like pie crust. Add sugar, place % of this over pan (9x12), press down a little, cover with cooked dates and then sprinkle the rest over the top to cover so dates will not cook through. Bake in medium oven. Filling :— 1 small pkg. dates. 14 cup brown sugar. 1 cup water. Boil and cool. —Mrs. J. B. Johnson. FRUIT SHORT CAKE (Original Recipe) 2 cups flour. 3 level teaspoons baking powder. Y% |b. shortening. Grated rind of one orange 14 cup white sugar. 1 egg well beaten. 4 cup sour cream or milk. Pinch of baking soda. Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Work in shortening. Then add orange rind. Make a soft dough, knead as little as possible. Divide dough in half and roll each piece large enough to cover a ten-inch layer cake tin, spread melted butter over both layers, then 30 put together and butter top. Bake 26 minutes in moderate oven, allow to cool slightly then separate layers and put fruit that has been previously pre- pared, between layer and on _ top. Serve with whipped cream.
