UNIVERSITY COLLEGE of the FRASER VALLEY ~. | RE International Education N@@dlines What we do in International Education The International Education department has been active at UCFV for three years. We sponsor a variety of activities, of which the most visible is the presence of the international students studying on campus. There are currently 46 full-time credit students studying at UCFV. In addition, the International Education department has hosted six short-term summer study tours, consisting of 130 students and 12 teachers from Japan and Singapore. - Other International Education activities at UCFV include events to increase Cultural awareness such as International Days, film and lecture series, partnership in Canadian International Development Agency-sponsored events, tours by visiting educators and lecturers, instructor exchanges, and visiting study tours. We are currently planning a study tour to Nagasaki, Japan for Canadian students and educators for the summer of 1993. The benefits of International Education for UCFV and the community are many. The presence of international students enriches the experience for the entire student body at post-secondary institutions. Students snd faculty benefit from the renewal and professional development opportunities provided by working within a cross-cultural milieu. International Education also provides opportunities for Canadian students and faculty members to study, and travel in other countries. Scholarships are available for both students and faculty to enable them to study and work overseas. Current opportunities for instructor exchanges linked directly to UCFV are exchanges with institutions in Tianjin, China and Yokohama, Japan. International Education also expands the overseas employment horizons for B.C. students. Increased contact between British Columbia citizens and individuals of various countries can prove mutually beneficial for their long-term career development. International Education helps establish the basis on which connections and goodwill are built and economic, cultural and statutory knowledge is learned — all necessary precursors to international trade and investment. International Education provides revenue for institutions as well as for the communities in which the students are studying. Local students are not deprived of seats by the presence of international students on campus. International Education operates on a cost-recovery basis, and the revenue generated is used to pay for additional seats, sections and other enhancements such as equipment or learning materials in ESL, academic and career programs throughout the university college. Summer study tours utilize otherwise unused facilities and provide short-term employment for staff and faculty. All International Education programs generate revenue for UCFV to help create new, and enhance existing, programs. Involvement in development projects will lead to improved education and training systems within Third World countries. The International Education office promotes development agencies such as Canada World Youth, CIDA, and CUSO. The International Education office is committed to the goal of “internationalizing the campus” through sponsoringevents and activities which increase awareness about all cultures on campus. The reality is that not many young Canadians will grow up and live in the same town all their lives — they may live anywhere in the ‘global community’. The presence of International Education activities in the post-secondary system prepares all students to be citizens of the world. INTERNATIONAL ED.
