The FVC Community Service Award went to the Mission Lifetime Learners, an organization which arranges continuing education courses for seniors. Charles McPherson accepted the award for the Lifetime Learners. Leslie deBroekert, the 1990 recipient of the Governor General;s Medal, gave the student address, which stressed the importance of setting personal goals. DeBroekert, who has been a secretary, truck driver, fitness instructor, and top criminology student, and is now an entrepreneur, said that “I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t set my original goals and taken my first small steps.” Interlibrary loans The last day for initiating interlibrary loans is June 28. If you require any interlibrary loans over the summer, please let the LRC know before then. The service will resume on Aug. 26. Coulter to Thailand Business administration instructor Brian Coulter has taken the Thai government up on its offer to visit with other academic-types while vacationing in Thailand. Coulter will be giving a lecture on “The Effects of North American Free Trade on Southeast Asia” to the faculty of economics at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Abu Dhabi, anyone? The college system in the United Arab Emirates is looking for college administrators who would be interested in the following positions: V.P. Finance and Administration; V.P. Academic Services; Dean of Business Programs; Coordinator of Business Programs; Head of Non-Instructional Services. Headlines/June 25, 1991 Janzen wins Terry Fox medal Former Fraser Valley College student Daniel Janzen, who died of cancer last fall, was posthumously awarded the Terry Fox gold medal at Simon Fraser University’s June convocation ceremonies. The Terry Fox medal is awarded annually to an individual who demonstrates “personal qualities of courage in adversity and dedication to society.” Last October, Janzen’s brother accepted a posthumous degree from SFU in Daniel’s name. Cards pour in, but appeal a hoax Jill Vike sends thanks to everyone who sent in business cards to add to the collection of Craig Shergold, a young English boy battling cancer. Unfortunately, a recent Ann Landers column revealed that the card appeal was a hoax. Craig is receiving 10,000 cards a day, but doesn’t want them, so please don’t send any more. If anyone else wants to start a business card collection, Vike has 247 of them available to the first caller.
